I'd be interested to know how well that Maico rides, I wouldn't be concearned with bhp or bhp/litre as a big single is never the best configuration for max efficiency or performance.

But it's kind of accepted knowledge that the 2stroke petrol engine does not work too well at big cylinder capacities, due to factors such as poor scavenging and large combustion chamber's giving a slow ignition/burn to the mixture.

I know 500cc MX engines seem to work ok, and sidecar 600cc+ motor's have worked well, and also that very big old school 2stroke outboard motors have large capacity cylinders, but scientifically big 2strokes don't work that well.

I wonder if the Maico ticks over and pulls ok low down without four stroking, and likewise if it revs out cleanly to it's 5000-6000rpm? max without spluttering?

The engine used in the Maico is used in side cars quite a lot. Think it's a fairly old design - as you might expect, there's not a massive impetuous to spend loads of money on R&D of single cylinder 2 strokes not far off the size of smaller modern car engines!
