£60 worth of water softener resin beads.

My fairly old water softener was only letting through a trickle and was diagnosed with contaminated or clumped resin. It was either £700 for a new unit or £450 for an engineer to swap the resin.

A bit of online searching later I felt it was worth giving it a go myself. The process was really simple. Wet vac to clear out the salt chamber, then unscrew the pressure vessel, empty the old resin, add the new and put it all back together. I flushed all the valves and pick ups and it's working great again.

How much for the resin?

I was wrong. I said £60, but it was actually £65 for 16 litres of Purolite C100E.

I'm not 100% that's be best resin for my device, but it definitely works.

Oh and I also spent £12.95 for a funnel designed to fit the 2.5" neck of the pressure vessel. Definitely made it easier to get the resin in without making a mess.

The resin looks like a mix of sand and small fish eggs. Apparently it's super slippery if you spill it on a hard floor, due to it being made up of tiny beads. I did the work in the garden just in case.
