What's the pope got to do with it?
The Romans had a similar view on homosexuality as we do - if it's your bag then whatever but don't make it too public, especially concerning slaves. Even sleeping with your female slaves was frowned upon, although many did it in private. It may have been seen as not doing one's duty to refuse to take on an apprentice but you most definitely weren't supposed to fuck them - if you did you had to be discrete about it. The likes of Spartacus etc. is a load of bollocks, if admittedly entertaining.
And homosexuality in Victorian times was downright illegal. It wasn't considered normal in any way, shape or form. Look what happened to Oscar Wilde. |
