The run up to Bury Hill?

Yeah that's it. Brilliant road. Can't believe they haven't stuck average cameras along that bit.

Had a fairly long route planned today, but felt I needed to allow time for the passes to defrost a bit. Then, by the time I'd given the chain a clean and lube, didn't get away till gone mid-day.

First stop was for coffee in Keswick, then blatted along the A66 to go down by Ullswater, but road closed before Pooley Bridge, so had to turn around, head back a ways, and head in on a different road. Ullswater shots:

Got lost in the woods Laughing

A quick run to the top of the Kirkstone Pass:

I was going to go down to Ambleside, then Coniston, and across Birker Fell to Wastwater, but it was 4pm by the time I got to Kirkstone, so had to admit defeat and turn back. Oh well, these longer runs will have to wait until the weather warms up a bit.

Good lord. Breathtaking scenery!

How busy are the roads Mr ChickenStrip? Could you guess how many cars you see in an hour or a few miles for example.

I had hoped that the roads would be empty on a Monday, hence going today and not yesterday. And indeed the actual traffic volume was pretty low. Trouble with today's route is, it seems that more HGVs than usual are using it, due to the A591 being closed from Keswick. So Ullswater and the Kirkstone Pass are being used as an alternative route for heavy vehicles wanting to get down to Ambleside and Windermere seemingly. Which is daft, because the roads are very narrow and winding. So you get stuck behind one of these HGVs, and every time they meet a car coming the other way, everything stops while the oncoming traffic shuffles about to let the lorry through, and you barely get above 15mph Rolling Eyes

It's not like there are queues of them, but why the feck these wagons can't make more use of the M and A6 to the east to skip the blockages beats me. It doesn't take many to cause problems on these little roads.

The route I use down to Keswick, on the other hand, is nearly always just about empty on any day of the week, which is partly why I've been hitting it so often.

Bit of a whinge there, but still had a good afternoon Smile

Yeah, had to stop for a couple of minutes today while some were herded along the road. All part and parcel of this region, but for me, the scenery, and on the odd occasion when you do get the good bits of road clear, and a sunny day (not asking much, am I Laughing ), it makes it all worth it.

On the odd occasions when I came up this way in summer whilst still living down south, I didn't find the traffic too bad, as long as you avoid certain places, and especially Windermere (why everyone heads there is a mystery to me). However, if they don't get these flood-damaged roads sorted before the tourists really start to come back, it's going to be a nightmare.

i suspect the roads will be fixed by the start of easter or in the case of A591 a diversion round the west side of the lake put in place.. the bridges will take 12 months or so ...

but bank holidays in the lakedistrict are very , very busy..head bangin time really ... i usually head for Dumfries & Galloway.

Longest run on the Striple yet today, and they're not likely to get any longer! It's ok for about 150 miles, but after that, gimme back my Fazer! Crying or Very sad Route was Alston, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Brough, Hawes, Settle, Windermere, Kirkstone Pass and home. About 210 miles I think.

Not sure I've got the hang of catching the Yorkshire Dales/Pennines on camera yet:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1796_zpsfyoub4e0.jpg

And all the best views were looking into the sun today, heading south. Brough castle, just a quick shot:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1801_zpsi7xenuds.jpg

Pennines:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1817_zpssmnwt3qo.jpg

Pen-y-Ghent:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1823_zpssry31ixq.jpg

Church at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, with Pen-y-Ghent rising behind:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1824_zps7zu8xsv5.jpg

Heading up towards the Kirkstone Pass from Windermere:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1833_zpsvungem8d.jpg

And I'm now deaf, cos the Striple's pipe is embarrassingly loud!

I didn't get over to the western side, though I will head for Wasdale again soon. I don't recall seeing a VTR, think it would have stuck in my mind as I do like them. Quite a few others seemed to be skiving, er, I mean, off on holiday today...I'm a member of the feckless unemployed, what's your excuse? Laughing

I actually booked the day off last week when I saw the forecast. For once, they got it right Laughing

I did a clockwise 'lap' of the lakes, with some diversions into the middle. So the route back took me via Keswick, then Kirkstone, but that wasn't until about 5pm. It was getting a bit cold so I didn't stop for any more photos, but a superb day all round. Thumbs Up

Not the most scenic, but the most enjoyable 'fast riding' stretch for me is the A595 from Penny Bridge to Egremont.

Probably better that way, scenic and fast riding will be my downfall Laughing I'm just taking some time to learn the roads a bit before turning it up, so quite into the scenic stuff until the familiarity comes.

Is that down to the seat? I thought the seat was good, because I could do 300 miles / 6 hours a day, and 3 hours without stopping.

But then I got the "high comfort seat" and my god, it's like sitting on 50ft of kitten belly button fluff Smile

Original seat makes moving around easy, but is firm. Comfort seat is unbelievably comfy, but makes sliding around nearly impossible (which is desirable sometimes),

Leg position is more cramped than the Fazer, although I don't notice that for the first 100 miles or so. Dodgy knees Rolling Eyes Seat, yes, gets a bit uncomfortable after that kind of distance.
But I did a lot of very bumpy roads today, and that took it out of my shoulder a bit. Perhaps I really should do something about backing off the suspension settings from 'feckin solid' Rolling Eyes but not really sure I know what I'm doing with that. And for the last couple of years, I've noticed that not much riding through winter leaves me needing to get used to long distance work again come better weather; first couple of long rides of the year leave me knackered.

In short, age and physical condition are against me Laughing

S'all good though, I didn't really plan to do these kinds of long rides on it, but thought i'd give it a shot today, as the Fazer needs some work doing, but won't get done till April. Once that's sorted, I'll be where I wanted to be - Striple for shorter sunny day blasts more locally, Fazer for the distance stuff Smile

You can get it setup professionally of course, but if done yourself you can spend a bit more time trying settings either side of a base.

Its a simple job with two people, a slightly more faffy job with one person. But if you have an Abba stand, it's much simpler.

I know most people prefer riding bikes than spannering them though Smile

It's definitely worth setting the suspension back to the "comfort setting" as per the manual and seeing how that feels. Who knows what the previous owner had it set to.

I set mine to half way between normal and comfort and it was pretty much spot on, a tiny bit hard for me. I then tried a smidge softer and which is where it's at. I can hustle it a lot more than I used to even on the softer side, but I think it's going to be all day comfy too having done 100 miles with ease on standard seat. The sofa seat option should be pure luxury Smile

The perfect length ride for the Striple today, about 150 miles, beautiful weather for it Mr. Green
Stopped at Derwent Reservoir:

Then I came over all arty-farty with the camera Laughing

Stopped here for 15 minutes and not one other vehicle came by, just pure silence, broken by the call of the occasional bird:

Went to Hartside quite early this morning, roads were quiet & mostly dry, sun was out, bliss Thumbs Up

I went my usual long route across the moors, then instead of going on the actual pass I headed towards Castle Carrock and ended up on the other side of the pass a few miles from Penrith. The Penrith side towards the cafe is my favourite way of doing the pass by far. Totalled about 165 miles.

Yeah, I must say, I thought that - who wants to remember Avon Road Runners?! Shocked Pale

Edit: Oh, there was one other thing I quite liked, but didn't get pics of - for which, stevo, you're gonna hate me! Laughing A first gen V-Max, with aftermarket bodywork and lots of mods - didn't look at all bad actually.

Yes, you know it's not summer yet anytime you're in the shade and breeze.

Good to meet you Copycat.

Did you see that dick head in the red car come up behind you? A bike came past us first, then this knob just went just as you gave a cyclist a wide berth, nearly went right into the back of you? Perfect illustration of why I prefer that road mid week - too many twats like that on it.
