Jason Statham has just bought a place near me in the New forest.
he likes to go shooting there with Guy Richie apparently.

Mad Max meets Fallout meets umm Twisted Metal so right up my street.
I'm really struggling to see how this was greenlit Laughing

It's got Fast 'n' Furious cheese with Scream level GCSE drama.

I'm a big Mackie fan but this.... Sad

Have you seen Metal Hurlant Chronicals? Same difference, even Joe Flanigan couldn't rescue it.

3 Body Problem on Netflix

Currently half way through, its quite geeky in places, but the plot keeps moving forward at pace, with some pretty horrific scenes in places

Just watched the series Unlocked: a jail experiment on Netflix. Docuseries on changing the way a unit in an American jail is run. I enjoyed it, watched all episodes.

Subtitles on, as there's a lot of black slang dialogue. That and I'm slightly deaf in the left ear.

Fallout (Amazon) - 9.5/10

Now, this might be the best adaptation of a video game series that I have ever seen. The Tv series does not follow any of the video games story lines, it's a new story with new characters in the Fallout universe. The locations, costumes, gadgeds of all sorts, chems... are all very well depicted. I also like the cast, incl. all the cameos.

I'm 3 episodes in and enjoying it so far. Tad slow initially but appreciate they're world building (though some of us know the world pretty well already!).

Ella Purnell was a good choice. She was good in Yellowjackets.

Decided to go back on Netflix and see what was around.
Tempted to re-binge on Dexter but might save that for when I'm super grumpy and need cheering up Laughing

Meanwhile found an old Aussie 3-season series from 2015-19 called GLITCH which promises to be corny (zombies/notzombies) but includes the delectable Patrick Brammell who is apparently the cousin of our own dear Spudly.

So Glitch is a bit quirky so far but its enough to keep me interested.

Ripley (Netflix)

Shot in crisp B&W, this series is an exquisite exercise in cinematography. Very, very slow paced... but you're here for the art, right?

Currently half way though this now, it's a tough watch in places, don't think i could binge it though

Just watched episode 4, where Donny recalls the Edinburgh Fringe experience....... that was pretty grim

We are also watching The Tattooist of Auchwitz on Sky Atlantic, we visited there earlier in the year, so wanted to watch this

Not one for binge watching either IMO, brilliant, but grim at the same time

Good Lord Shocked

When I look in the mirror, I see someone that closely resembles Martha from Baby Reindeer. But without the Scottish accent, obvs.

Luckily, there are not many frumpy days, and when I look in the mirror there is someone who resembles Annie Wilkes in Misery, instead.

(but in my head I am a tubby fairy godmother singing Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo, or Jane Russell in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ) Laughing

Someone recommended an Aussie detective/"comedy"
DEADLOCH
(on Amazon Prime)

It is entertaining enough, but a couple of the characters are far too caricaturised and its annoying the fuck out of me Brick Wall

But I am still watching it anyway Laughing

Supacell (2024, Netflix)

Following the lives of disparate individuals that, unbeknownst to them, have a secret in common. Yet Another Take On Superheroes™ but hold the presses: this time they're Black... There are so many overused tropes and I haven't even finished the first episode!

But dammit, it's nice to see Sarf London get some love. This is my manor, ya feel me, bruv?

Taboo.

Didn't watch it at the time because I saw the reviews that it was dark and 'mumbly'. But I just watched it all over the last few weeks and I can say I really enjoyed it and it was intruiging all the way through. The ending was disapointing though, I think..

Cobra Kai - 9/10 (netflix)

I was sceptical at first, but I got nothing else to do, so I tried to watch the first episode of the first season... long story short, I finished the first season of the show, and I am hooked. It is sort of a trip down the memory lane, but at the same time it feels fresh and engaging with very good performances from both main characters and their karate students. I vaguely remember the Karate Kid films, but even if you've never heard of them, the Cobra Kai show tells you everything worth knowing from the past anyway.

Sugar - Apple TV
Private investigator John Sugar examines the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer.

Awesome, really well done.
Has an air of the old film noir gumshoe

Alchemy of Souls (Netflix)

Light-hearted historical fantasy with magical Jikdo* instead of wands. It's mostly melodrama with a few OTT fight scenes here and there. Very much "show don't tell" so a bit hard to work out what's going on till you've had time to digest the first episode.

Personally I find the twee and innocent humour of Korea charming but if that's not your thing there's always Kingdom.

*Single edged Korean short sword. The Korean military mostly fought with spear and bow so normally swords were seen as secondary weapons.

Kaos (2024)

Classical Greek myth reimagined for a modern audience... Ye Gods, Nay! Surprisingly it's not terrible.

Personally my gold standard for "brought up to date because... reasons" is Shakespeare's Coriolanus (2011) where the play is faithfully reproduced with a mostly contemporary backdrop. Though there are some square peg in a round hole moments the film carries on regardless through sheer force of will, Ralph Fiennes and the supporting cast's acting chops. Gerald Butler isn't too bad although there's a hint of "I'm something of an actor myself" about him.

Anyhoo, if Coriolanus is a 9/10 then Kaos is more like 6 or 7, based on the first episode. The contemporary transpositions are merely cute but the characters are interesting so I shall plough on.
