For the OP; you don't post on here for over two years, then when you do it's a link to a competition you are trying to fraudulently manipulate Wink - does seem reasonable to me that people might consider it 'spam'!

Not really - am friends with enough people in or have been in the military etc.
However, I don't like the way they are trying to shoe-horn the definition of 'Heroes'. I'm not sure what I consider exactly to be 'heroic', but someone being paid to do it in the first place certainly takes something away from that to my mind.
Then there's the fact they knowingly choose to go to somewhere that they are likely to be injured which poses no real 'defence of our country' principals - in fact the two invasions have likely made their families they would traditionally be 'protecting' less secure.
People that joined up before 11/9, then yes I can they didn't know what was going to happen, but anyone in the services now has done it well-informed and made the choice anyway.
Then of course there's the variety of nasty things we have done and are involved in as an occupying force and how they naturally get hushed up. I suspect a lot of the 'real heroes' are the local people that manage to keep on living in the middle of this warfare because they have no other choice!

Since they signed up; it's pretty damn obvious where they're likely to get sent! If you take the King's shilling now, it is basically your choice to go Afghanistan or Iraq; you must know that that is what you are signing up to do.
I think (I may be wrong) that the longest 'indenture' is eight years, so even those that signed up to a long term contract should have the choice now. And of course it's always possible to get out if you really want anyway.

Nonetheless, I harbour no ill will towards our armed forces, nor those who come back injured. I do, however, bear an inordinate amount of bile against the Sun's flagship charity, because by adding this 'Hallmark cards' patina of romanticism to the injured veteran's plight, they're massively devaluing what these people have gone through, in my opinion.

Also, OP: /B/CF is not your personal army. Take your vote-whoring elsewhere, please.

I can only comment on the two chaps I know but they signed up to serve this country regardless of what is currently going on, if they get sent to Afgan then so be it.

That's about it. And doesn't seem to complicated Confused - what's the confusion? Just don't sign up if it's not what you want to do.

I've turned down jobs I've been offered in the past as I've thought "ethically I can't take this job because I disagree with what I'm going to be asked to do".

If they want to serve this country, there's a lot of other ways they can do it without signing up to the forces. The reality is, still, that they are unlikely to be too useful 'serving the country' in our current wars - more like they are serving a previous US president who loved warmongering.

Poppy appeal
Help for heroes
NSPCC
RSPCA
Cancer research
RNLI

In the naive hope that they help the people that really need it.

For instance, regardless of whether it or may not be a good thing, I won't give money to chuggers - easily the first £40k+ of money they make in a year can not go to the charities they are supporting, I believe.
Then there's the case of charities that employ numerous people on six figure salaries. Again, I don't personally like the idea of paying such people to live much more expensive life styles than me 'for charity'.

I'd think most people in the military aren't in it just for the money... Or they'd go do the same job privately in theatre and earn a fair bit more.
