Three Zone technologies?

As its in reference to oil... is that similar to Castrols "Trizone" shite.. that spews some crap about the Clutch Zone, Engine zone and Gearbox zone.. generally about the wear and tear of parts in oil, and is all about "Getting the best performance from your bike". Which is probably spew to make use think it works soo much better, when in fact every oil does it anyway..

I dont ride sports bikes Razz Commuter..

I've had 3 bikes.. Honda ss50 (1970), Honda CG125(1977) and Honda CB250N (1980).. all pretty old bikes

But i do it all myself, cheapest 10w40 semi synthetic oil i can find (Asda atm)

I understand oils to the extent that different viscositys act differently on the engine in different weathers.. but havent a clue about if one is better then another, or if its all hype to make us buy more expensive brands.

Engine oil reaches any part of the internal engine which is moving and in need of lubrication, top end, bottom end, cams, bearings, gears, levers, sump, oil filter, through the oil cooler if the bike has one, oil pump..

Not sure how it affects the actual performance of the bike.. just make the wear and tear better or worse Very Happy

What bike(s) do you/have you owned in the past 5 years?

Own quite a few, but rarely sell any. From small 50cc bikes up to 1200cc bikes.

What oil do you use in your current bike? (Type and Brand if known)

Depends on the bike. The ones that are used most get Rockoil 10W40 semi synthetic oil. A car oil that can be got in 25L drums. Ones that get occasional use but a serious thrashing might get better quality bike specific oil.

Do you change your oil yourself or does someone do it or you?

I change it myself.

Do you think the type/quality of oil affects overall bike performance?

Not really. Yes it has an effect on life expectancy of the engine, but I would expect other factors to have killed the engine before the oil becomes relevant.

If so, what elements of its performance?

Long term life expectancy of the engine.

Which parts of your bike does the engine oil reach?

Gearbox, clutch, crank, piston, cams,oil pump, etc. That is assuming a 4 stroke.

What do you understand by three zone technology?

Not a clue.

All the best

Keith

What bike(s) do you/have you owned in the past 5 years?
See my profile. Click the little "Profile" button under my post
What oil do you use in your current bike? (Type and Brand if known)
Whatever 10w40 SG is cheap & convenient. Not bothered by brand as long as it is
Do you change your oil yourself or does someone do it or you?
I do it.
Do you think the type/quality of oil affects overall bike performance?
Yes, especially with age.
If so, what elements of its performance?
Obviously only small effect on engine. "Performance" for me is much more affected by brakes, suspension and tyres.
Which parts of your bike does the engine oil reach?
The engine, clutch & gearbox in my bikes. Occasionally all of it when I forget to put the filler cap back on.
What do you understand by three zone technology?
No idea

You've just walked in to a biker bar, asked everyone to fill in your survey then complained when some people drew a cock & balls in crayon on the paper.

You really shouldn't be surprised by this. If you are god know what you're going to do when the Cat pops up.

What bike(s) do you/have you owned in the past 5 years?
GSZR 300

What oil do you use in your current bike? (Type and Brand if known)
Motorcycle Oil, I don't know the brand but it's 900 oil.

Do you change your oil yourself or does someone do it or you?
My grandma usually does it if I'm having a shower, if not I tend to do it myself.

Do you think the type/quality of oil affects overall bike performance?
Yeah, if I use anything below 900 the bike feels a bit funny... you know what I mean? Wobbly like....

If so, what elements of its performance?
Definitely I feel the engine braking performance is far more superior with less oil. But the 900 oil seems to be perfect, I only put a little bit in and it just works wonders.

Which parts of your bike does the engine oil reach?

To be fair, I just cover my bike with it, all over the bodywork... so pretty much everywhere. I find if you rub it in around the engine casing it actually makes the bike more aerodynamic and more stable + it sounds better.

What do you understand by three zone technology?
The technology has three zones.

Am I the only one in fits of laughter at the fact inside of a single post - let alone thread - she's already slapping Mike down for posting a wall of text?

I can honestly say he's the first forum contributor I've seen who needs to TL;DR his efforts and put a précis in the footnotes.

Anyway, not sure I actually fit in to your category, but I do own a sports bike, which I've used for commuting. Fun at the weekend would be off-road events or track events; generally a few hours worth of riding and definitely for fun.

Bikes from the last 5 years:
DR600 (supermoto wheels)
RS250 (96)
R6 (99, track bike)
TRX850 (96)
KTM350Enduro (87,2 stroke trail bike)
SV650 (01) (race bike)
SV650 (99) (race bike)
BMW100RT (Rattedish)
CRM125 (91?)
SV650 (99)
Hussaberg 501E (2002 enduro&supermoto)
* 675 (2006/7, race bike)
* FX400R (88?)
* CCM 404E (2004, enduro&supermoto)
* KTM 690 Enduro (2008)
* KTM 200 EXC (2003)
* GSXR1000 (2006)
* Beta Rev3 (2000)
* Honda c90 x 3 (1983/4/6)
* Honda CRF50 (with 88 kit and various tart)
* KTM 144SX (2008, converted for enduro use, road legal)
* KTM 300EXC (1999, later suspension/wheels)

* I currently own this bike

Oil:
All sorts, depends on the bike, what offers are on, what I'm going to be using it for and other things.

Almost always changed it myself, can't think of a time in the last 5 years I haven't.

I do think it affects performance, but to such a tiny degree I'd only even slightly consider it when racing (not trackdays) on road tracks. Even then, I know I'm a bigger limiting factor.
Changing it regularly is more important in such situations.

There's generally only one aspect of 'performance' - the engine makes more power.

As for what parts of the bike the oil reaches, it depends if it's a 2 stroke/4 stroke and in some cases the design of the bike a bit - for instance some off road bikes it reaches the frame because that's where they store it Smile.

No idea about 'three zone technology', but would guess it's some silly 'tech buzz phrase' used to sell snake oil.

I don't own a sports bike but once did.

Sports bike lets you feel like you are Rossi end of.

Or it can let you play about on a track at weekends or in competion.

Some say the best bike some say occasional use only.

I service some bikes myself but in warranty bikes at main dealer.

I use good quality oil just to be safe. Based on reputation should provide good standard of quality.

Oil gets in sump, cylinder walls, all moving parts of engine. And slobbers enclosed non moving parts too.

gearbox and diff separate compartments.

Three Zone Technology I know know is some artifarti cyber speak for multi tasking

Hmm....I can't resist answering....

What bike(s) do you/have you owned in the past 5 years?

2000 Kawasaki ER5 (sold) and 1985 Suzuki GSX550. Neither sport bikes but the GSX is technically a sports tourer. I can think of more appropriate names for it.....

What oil do you use in your current bike? (Type and Brand if known)
Motul 10/40 at the moment as I won it last year. 2.5k later it's almost empty.

Do you change your oil yourself or does someone do it or you?
To be honest, the bike does it itself, see below... I change the filter annually but it goes through a litre of oil every few hundred miles...

The ER5 was serviced once when I had it by a garage. Never again.Mad Shocked

Do you think the type/quality of oil affects overall bike performance? If so, what elements of its performance?

I've not noticed anything different between budget 10/40 oil and the Motul 10/40. However, the clutch works better with bike oil in it.

Which parts of your bike does the engine oil reach?
Everywhere, including me and the road. You can plot where the GSX has been by following the dots on the road Laughing

What do you understand by three zone technology?
Don't even go there. I hate that new-age/hippy team building rubbish. Not my cup of tea Tut Tut

Right then,

1) YBR 125 for the last 2 and a half years.

2) Halfords Semi-Synthetic 10w40.

3) I do it myself.

4) In my case with a small engine in a low state of tune, not really, although I have read accounts of one brand of oil producing a noticeable improvement, but have no first hand experience of it.

5) Clutch, gears, cams, rockers, and everything else in there that needs it.

6) Marketing hype?

Teflon-Mike wrote:
To start with, define a 'Sports-Bike'.... & nail down your demographic a bit better.

Plenty of people wear running shoes.... not many of them ever run more than for a bus in them....

The defanition of a modern 'sports-bikes' as a genre, generally is a road-going motorcycle with styling and featurs aping non-road-going road-race machines. Most, are used solely on the road, but many get kept purely as track-day bikes for non-competative riding around closed circuits, or actualy club competition road-racing.

But, the term 'sports-bike' could also be applied by some-one without specialist knowledge to describe a Trail-Bike, Enduro-Bike, Super-Moto or pure Trials bike, intended for use & often competition on unsurfaced roads or courses.
Again, most road-going trail-bikes rarely see mud under thier tyres, and they tend to be road-machines with styling & features aping thier pure competition cousins, but many do get kept purely for sport or are used for leisure riding on the road, in non-competative events or actual competition.

Bikes themselves, range in size from the humble moped, of less than 50cc and limitd to around 35mph up to machines of perhaps 1.5l or more, and speeds in excess of 200mph.Then there is as MUCH diversity within the riders, and the way they percieve thier motorcycle and the way they use it.

As a post-grad, you dont seem to have started this survey off very well...... and certainly not in a very accademic manner.....

So, Hypothesis, you want to consider the psycology of motorcyclists and thier attitudes to thier motorcycle, particularly whether the machine is more than merely a 'tool' enabling thier hobby, or whether they have some 'emmotional investment' in the machine....

I'm not a Psycology Don.... but I do know that the very first thing that will be leveled against such a study is that it is shall we say.... 'unchallenging', and unlikely to tell us anything we dont already know.

OF COURSE motorcyclists make an emmotional investment in thier machines! Takes about five seconds for a five year old to figure that one out! Look at all the custom & classic shows, talk to ANY biker, or just watch what happens when one CRASHES on TV.... even a 'pro' rider will jump up, blood pouring from thier helmet, shoving the medics asside to see if the bikes OK!

What I presume you want to do, is look at a much more specific sub-sect of the entire motorcycling population, and focus in on the 'thrill seekers', whose interest in the persuit is not so diverse as the main-stream, the ones who get bikes purely for high-speed adrenaline kicks. (The ones that will go for a two hour leisure ride on a Sunny Sunday!)

They are a fairly obviouse sub-set; they tend to be low mile riders. They tend to change machines often, and are as likely to switch between sports, and dip in and out of biking, swapping thier bike for a jet-ski or quad, hang-glider or other high-adrenaline sports equipment... and they MAY be road riders, but Track-Day riders AND competition riders, in disciplines accross the board, fit that SAME profile.

Guess what? No prized for the conclusion that THEY tend NOT to make the emmotional investment in the machine as other bikers, and DO tend to look at the bike 'more' as a tool, fact that they so readily switch between actual machines and in and out of the persuit, demonstrates that pretty well.

So from the beginning, your not fairing well, the hypothesis is unchallenging, and does not provide any 'insight' that has not already been studied, better, and in more depth.

Significantly by marketing men, becouse selling a 'life-style' is a lot easier than selling a tool, and knowing who buys expensive accessories to personalise the machine they have a lot of emmotional investment in, and who will spend large amounts of money on having the latest or more impressive piece of sports equipment and will readily disguard an old one, is rather very important to them.......

This doesn't seem like a particularly credable study, and it CERTAINLY doesn't seem to be one of merit for Post-Grad Masters Thesis, and asking hotch-potch check box questions about oil? Come ON! Designing phyc profile questionaires is A-Level stuff.... and you've even done THAT badly!

Not answered your questions, but err.... my ten minutes worth of contribution for your consideration.

I have to agree with the above, your definition of a sports bike rider is not mine and the level of your survey is more KS3 than Post Grad.
I do not fit your definition.
My bikes are not what you would call a sports bike.
I ride about 30 miles a year.
If I am riding at a weekend I will spend about five minutes on the bike.
However..
Non of my bikes are road legal, they are just for sports use.
All of my riding is under the ACU or AMA code and regulations.

In conclusion although all of my riding is competitive I am not a sports bike rider.
You are a spammer for an oil company and not a student.
