It had it's head at a funny angle and was looking in my direction as if to say 'what the...?"

I can read sheep like a book, comes from growing up in the Highlands you see. Did you know, they can recognise cars? They'll generally only jump out in front of non-locals, cos non-locals will go "aaaarghh fluffy animal must avoid" and swerve off the road and down a cliff to a fiery end, thus amusing the onlooking flock. Locals just nail it and wipe 'em out.

A friend of mine took out nine sheep at once with his Passat estate, which was fairly impressive. Though he did end up in the sea. Thumbs Up

The choice doesn't strike me as a lot different from many of the the jaywalking tourists I encounter most days in Central London during the summer...

So far I've managed to avoid them all, although there was this one daft girl that just stood in the middle of the road and stared as I made a right turn the other day. Luckily her friend dragged her out of the way before I had to make the choice of brake, or left or right swerve. Rolling Eyes

Splat em? My uncle went over the front of his GS500 hitting a hedgehog at 80mph.. Swerving's even worse if you hit something coming the other way though. If it's only a little critter, surely it's not much of a big deal to move around it? Bike tyres and squirrels are probably about the same width, if you can swerve around the mess of wet road markings and manhole covers, a squirrel can't be that much of a challenge? Still, if you can't swerve, it's either him or me, and I've got 200kg and some few mph advantage...

i went out the other day very early, bunnies EVERYWHERE, must have seen 100 of the cute little blighters. many ran out in front of me, but i didnt come close to hitting one. as soon as i see something near the road moving i back off the throttle, see its a bunny and stay off the throttle prepared to brake or adjust road position. i was able to avoid them all just by slowing down 5mph and moving to the left by about a bikes width.

I thought there was a law against breaking to avoid animals unless its something bigger then a dog, bassically, if you cause an accident through doing it, your fault.

Me and Jay were in Helens car with her and she braked to avoid a squirrel, had there been a car behind her it may of hit her, unfortunateley she missed the rat with a fluffy tail and he got away, despite me and jay shouting stuff like get it and kill it. Crying or Very sad

in a car its all well and good. it can go betwean your wheels, or even if it does go under your wheel then it wont do you much damage.

On a bike however something going under the wheel might wreck your tire, or cause you to lose control. On a bike i avoid animals just like i avoid potholes and manhole covers. In a car i couldnt care less Razz

Shows how observant you are Shaun, there was a car behind me, but I'm guessing they saw it too since they didn't rear end me Embarassed and yes there is a law against it, but as I said, I couldn't do it so I would face the consequences Confused
And you and Jay weren't shouting stuff like that at all....you were too busy trying to convince me it was still alive! Rolling Eyes

Roadkill (hit rather than squashed) is the best tasting. Pheasants hit by cars taste better with no lead shot. I once butchered a 'bambi' that one of my dad's friends had hit with his car, and finished off with a 3-foot monkey wrench. Damned tasty it was too. mmm, venison fillet steak..

That was after you had drove over him, he narrowly escaped death, as we were going towards him both me and jay did shout something. We had to convince you that you missed after because we wanted you to get us home using the accelerator and not just rely on rolling down hills to move. Razz

I'd hit it, I view myself as more important than a squirrel and if I couldn't safely avoid it i'd squash it.

I had one last year that ran from the side of the road like a bullet straight into the path of my front wheel. Confused

I've had quite a few animals run in front in front of me and i've narrowly avoided hitting them, this includes: squirrels, cats, a dog, a dear, hedgehogs late at night and other small rodents.

I have 0 animals on my conscience Dance! , my immediate action is to avoid them.

I ran over a seagull once. Funny, cos they usually fly away just in time. Made an interesting noise though.Confused

Ran over an already dead stag once that was lying in the middle of the road on a blind corner - very nasty as the antlers got stuck and the whole thing got dragged with the car, had to stop and reverse off it. Sick

I seem to remember when I was little that we hit a deer, lobbed it in the back of the car and later ate it. Yum. Thumbs Up

You don't really get any tasty animals on the Slough - London run. Sad

Highland cows, you stop. Especially when you're in a Mini. If they want to take half an hour to get off the road, there's not a whole lot you're going to be doing about it. Laughing

i don't think you should go to the effort of trying to squish an animal if it is in your way. if it moves it the way before you get to it then good on the little fluffy thing Thumbs Up but i don't think you should speed up and give yourself 10 points if you do manage to squish it before it can run away Thumbs Down

however, if you cant avoid it without putting your own life in danger then you don't have much choice but to squish the poor little thing i guess - your life is more important than a squirrels after all ....

I would avoid it, and I can't imagine that squashed furry creature is too grippy TBH.

A Rabbit ran into the side of my bike when I had my VFR and it sort of bounced off... (I was doing 60 at the time) it was dazed but it hopped off into the woods. Gave me a bit of a shock really.

I would have been upset if I had have killed it.

Hi

I would try and avoid hitting it, and would probably try before I conciously reacted.

Still didn't stop me running over a sheep.

All the best

I've killed a few things in the past. The most distressing was the cat that I killed while on my scooter... It ran out of a bush under the front wheel.

I went round a bend rather fast on the horse shoe pass only to be greeted by a sheep walking right down the centre of the road towards me... Slowed down to about 5mph as I went passed.

The code of the road is supposedly 'the only animal you are meant to brake for is a dog' I have no idea why but I read that somewhere Razz

You are supposed to try and avoid a dog as its assumed that its a pet. Anything else is wild and so you are not supposed to try and avoid it if it will put you/other road users in danger.
