Wouldn't surprise me, most frames are built in the same factories these days. Only a few actual frame manufacturers left.

AFAIK Giant are the largest, they also make the Trek and Specialized frames.

Just seen your strapline. To have the cables hidden with a similar spec to the one I've got would've been another £600.

For £600 (the cost of our last fortnight in Mallorca), I'll have cables on show thanks! Thumbs Up

This.

If you absolutely must clamp the frame, then wrap something real soft between the clamp and the frame.

It's not clamped, it's just resting on the bottom part.

A good benefit of carbon is that it doesn't bend, with steel and aluminium you can bend one slightly to affect it that may be difficult to see.

Carbon will just break if hit beyond it's maximum or will crack, meaning it should be fairly simple to check it yourself after an accident.

Shouldn't do that either.

You need to limit any possible points of pressure.

That is a nice bike....Jealous.

I'm very tempted to get one but knowing how clumsy I am I'm wondering if I should just stick to steel or pay more and go for the Plant X Ti frame... either way, I'd have to persuade SWMBO and then worry about leaving it locked up anywhere in London both of which would take a little of the enjoyment out of it I think.

Are you telling me steel doesn't dent if hit the wrong way?

Search google for Titanium frame failures. Lots of known problems around the chain stay area. Basically it comes apart. I suppose a lifetime warranty makes up for that???

Basically if you crash any bicycle you should have the frame checked over, not just Carbon. On paper it is the strongest material, unless hit with forces it is not designed to with-stand aka crashing into a car.

For the record I have crashed a carbon framed bike on ice, no cracks after careful inspection and has done a further 6,000 trouble free miles.

Crashability should not be the criteria when deciding on frame material. My next bike is going to be a steel bike, but only because I want a light tourer to do LEJOG, bit more comfortable and forgiving on longer rides, mounts for a rack and proper mudguard eyelets. Thumbs Up

No, every type of material can have breaking issues when it comes to proper crashes and normal wear and tear, I was thinking more on the accidental knock it over outside the pub kind of damage. I have a big steel dawes galaxy and a heavy alu rockhopper comp both of which handle that kind of drop well but a friend dropped his carbon ribble and put a big hole in it. I doubt that a Ti frame would do that... although if the frame had a lifetime warranty that would probably help ease my worries. I'll need to ride both options before I spunk over a grand on a bike though, need to make sure it is comfortable and rigid enough.

I've chucked my carbon focus on the deck in ice hard, it has probably fallen over 10+ times and it generally takes a fair amount of abuse, yet I have had over 15,000km trouble free on it.

A chap I know has just retired a carbon Bianchi frame after 100,000km cause a hairline crack is starting to show under the bottom bracket. Still not a bad life expectancy.

Why is carbon not a suitable material for bicycles, yet is more than suitable for cars and bikes?

Carbon is plenty suitable for bikes as evidenced by the huge amount of carbon bikes everywhere.

Variations in manufacture can clearly make one bike more susceptible to getting broken due to a seemingly inconsequential knock though and stiffness of the frame can be down to how many layers of carbon the manufacturer has used. I'm not saying carbon isn't right for what I want or what anyone else wants I just haven't ridden it much and the one person I know who let me ride his bike had the same bike shatter outside a pub when the wind blew it over (this was about 2 years ago) so question the build quality of the cheaper carbon bikes and intuitively think that a metal bike may be more durable. Although as mentioned before Ti bikes fail too....

Anyway - enough of thread hijacking - OP's bike is lush looking Thumbs Up

Lush, I'd have bought an N2A if I didn't live so far from Planet X's stores. Not going to spend that kind of money out on a bike without being sure It'll suit me first!

Got a top uncle who decided he'd get into cycling, spent a ton on this brand new Planet X, rode it once and then left it sitting at home for 6 months. He gave it to me a couple of years back for doing well in my A-levels and getting into uni. Laughing
