I don't wish to try and trivialise your loss, I know it's hard, and you and all those involved have my deepest sympathy, but I would be horrified if anyone quit riding as a result of my death. We all know the risks, ideally I would love to make it to 100 years, but if I had to shorten my time, I wouldn't trade anything for having experienced just one good ride. I've buried people through bike, car, cancer, heart attacks, D.I.Y accidents, and a number of other things, and no matter what the reason it always fucking hurts, but this is no reason to change what I do. We all owe the universe a death, how and when this happens is not our choice. Don't go for the 'gut reaction', take your time and grieve your loss, then look at any changes that need to be made.

I couldn't agree with you more Thumbs Up

Very sorry to hear about your loss.

It's a risk we take as bikers - even though i only ride a scoot. It's sad to see one of our own go down and i would like to express my deepest sympathies to those involved or have been touched by this moment.

RIP Collin

Remember - we ain't invincible BIKERS! Thumbs Down

Clearly Collin would not want you or anyone (who rides sensibly and well, like he did) to ever stop riding, keep at it and ride safe.

R.I.P Collin.

Always sorry to hear when we lose another friend we haven't met yet. I understand your feelings about the bike but I hope you don't make any snap decisions. I'm sure Colin wouldn't want you to give up riding.

My sincere condolences to you and Colin's friends and family.

There is a quote that goes something like:

Best wishes, skida

Hang on to the good times and have no regrets.

Put your bike away for a couple of days and think about whether to give up when your head is a bit clearer.

I'm so sorry for your loss, I've been there and you never forget. But the hurt gets easier after a while.

Dreadful news. Didn't know Colin, but, still, did feel a great deal of sympathy.

My condolences to everyone involved.

Sorry to hear this terrible news. All the best to the family! Crying or Very sad

It is a wake up call. I know this is a very morbid thought, but sometimes when I go out I think to myself, is this the last time I will see my home, then I slap myself and say don't be so stupid, concentrate on what you are doing and you will be fine. Only, even the best most sensible riders in the world can come a cropper.

Bikes are trez risky machines to be on.

Seeing posts like this make me want to sell my bike now! Confused

There isn't really much I can add other than my deepest sympathies.

I have yet to bury anybody in my life (I'm 30) I guess I've been lucky, but I can understand how you must feel about your bike. From what I've read on here and from your original post I think Coll would not want you to give up biking because of this.

You, his family and friends are all in our thoughts.

Just to say a big thank you to everybody who has wished Colins friends and family the best.

I thought ill keep you posted on the situation.

All who were out on Wednesday night went back to the scene last night exactly 24hours after it happened. Just driving the route in the car and i started to feel sickly nervous about seeing the scene again. The sharp 1st gear right hander came and i couldnt help but think about what it had looked like from my position the night before, the feelings of going round the bend and just seeing all the brake lights of the bikes in front come on... it all came back to me.

We pulled up and there was already 2 cars parked up, some other friends of Colls, laying some flowers. The sun had just set, and the low mist was slowly creeping over the road.

The markings on the road left by the crash investigators were testiment to the devastation that was caused on that night. There were still bits of bike plastics in the hedgerow, and a broken number plate of the taxi on the opposite side of the road.

I was again in a state of shock, and couldnt really place myself, it was like a film, all the time thinking, "im not really here, it didnt really happen". Then, walking to the spot where Coll lay, i noticed the blood stains on the tarmac, and couldnt take any more.

We are planning on doing that road one more time as a mark of respect to Coll, we are each donating to a central pot and the money donated to Colls family/favourite charity.

The police have now spoken to everybody who was there on the night, and have called one person in to give a full statement, he was the only person who actually witnessed Coll drop his bike and collide with the taxi.. so hopefully details will emerge of what happened.

Family and friends pay tribute to crash biker
by Charlotte Percival

ABOVE: Bikers follow the hearse carrying Colin Smith to Bishopthorpe Crematorium

THEY rode in solemn procession to pay tribute to a fallen friend.

Dozens of bikers were joined together in sadness in York, as they rode behind the cortege of a fellow motorcyclist from the city.

Colin Derek Smith, of Murton, York, died when his Suzuki GSXR 1000 bike was in collision with a taxi near Goole, two weeks ago.

The 43-year-old had owned and ridden motorcycles since he was 16 and well know throughout the motorcycle community as Coastal Col, due to his passion for riding the coastal routes.

It was standing room only at Bishopthorpe Crematorium, where bikers filled the sides of the room.

The Reverend Andrew Clements urged the congregation not to dwell on the circumstances of Mr Smith's death, adding he had died doing what he loved, with his wife by his side.

He said Mr Smith was a man of small stature, but great heart, with a generous nature and many friends.

While the Guns'N'Roses hit Sweet Child Of Mine played in the background, Mr Clements read a poem written by Mr Smith's daughter Susan, 20, in memory of her father, which described him as a "true gent".

Before the coffin was committed, Mr Smith's widow Gillian shared her memories of him with the mourners.

In a statement issued by Mrs Smith, she said her husband had been a very experienced motorcyclist.

She said he had taken part in charity motorcycle runs, including the Barry Sheene run organised through West Yorkshire Police.

He was a keen angler and took part in many charity fishing matches in Yorkshire, fishing nearly every Sunday throughout the season.

She said: "Colin was a giver and would help and support anyone he could, he was like a ray of sunlight shining light into so many lives.

"He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, he leaves behind many treasured memories and happiness."
