I'm old enough to remember the disaster nationalised industry was back in the pre Thatcher days.

Everyone who worked for a nationalised company regarded it as a free joy ride with wage rises as requested thanks to the government having magic money trees, especially Labour who were in the pockets of the unions. Give BL government help to save the company and the workers came out on strike for more even though they were only partially nationalised. Anything the government touched was seen as fair game for non stop striking. We can't go back to that mindset again if we do start nationalising anything.

Me too, regular power cuts sometimes for days or rotating three hours on three hours off, TV blackouts due to strikes - oh and lets do it over Christmas too, rail strikes, car plant strikes - these were all nationalised companies dominated by unions, this is why UK manufacturing went down the pan.
Anyone thinking going back to that nightmare is somehow a good thing wasn't there.

So don't go back to that. It's not a given that history would repeat itself.

No it isn't, but how do you ensure that it doesn't happen?

So. The price of electricity has gone up massively.

Has the cost of production gone up by a similar amount?

I would prefer stronger regulation rather than nationalisation with more oversight on how profits are distributed.

Crap, it was pure greed just as its going to be now. Dockers on 50 grand need a top up. Barristers need more monry to keep their pools hot.

That's a simplistic tabloid assessment. It's more complex than that and we know that.

What gets me is that I work in the voluntary sector social service and if ever there's a group of workers who should be at the front of the que to have their wages increased its social care. Looking at the recent strikes I wish my lot would walk out.

Just checking the National Grid...

Wind, solar, biomass, nuclear etc. nope. However >40% of power generation comes from gas which has had some... price fluctuations recently.

So if you are paying for 100% renewable energy surely you have a reason to question why your electricity cost has risen?

100% renewable electricity as standard

I recall as a kid, when the price of tin first shot up, the refinery my dad worked at installed shaker beds to recover every last grain. When the price dipped they were shut off as not economically viable. Effort to run system < profit from system.

If the price of electricity goes up in general due to the cost of a major contributor (natural gas) then things like renewables might go from money pit to marginally viable. While we might hope the "green levy" and other scams social policies get cut from energy bills it won't make much odds.

Keeping energy bills high is good for the whole "net zero" grift. They won't drop significantly after either the war in Ukraine finishes or wholesale gas prices dip.

So the levys just go into general taxation, which pays for the NHS, pensions and benefits.

Remove the levys and something else will need to be taxed in its place. What would you chose to tax?

I don’t think they are. As I said before, the current elevated tax-take is simply paying off the massive post-lockdown debt and the government secretly welcome it.

Massive cuts in the civil service would free up a lot of money for the treasury. They don't do anything worthwhile.

So when your pension stops being paid because the people who process it aren't doing it any more?

You mean the impact on the hospitality sector which has already suffered the most economically through lockdown?

That was farmed out to a private concern years ago.

As I said, it wouldn't make much odds - a quarter of the bill at most - but I believe said extras are earmarked. Eco-shite is about the only thing you can tear out of the Treasury's grubby mitts.

BTW fish & chips are next:

Chip shops face 'extinction' amid cost of living crisis

It was £2 for a bag of chips last year, £2.20 at the start of this year and now my local shop is up to £2.40.

People will still find enough money to go buy fish and chips rather than cook it themselves.
