Oh yes, I do love Placebo, bought their greatest hits on Sunday.

Wouldn't necessarily call the White Stripes a 'rock' band though, wouldn't like to try to categorise them at all really. They have their own 'thing' with hints of many different musical styles. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. I put them on my list anyway I guess I meant it another way. I don't think they have specifically emo listeners and I don't think their music is exclusively emo, or at all emo. But I think the attitude they take is slightly emo-ish. You only have to look at Brian Molko to know that!

Interesting to hear what you all like, but I think Nath has got closest to what I was getting at (despite him being "elitist" )
In my gig-going lifetime I must have seen hundreds of young british bands play in pubs, clubs, youth clubs, small theatres or supporting bigger bands at local venues. Some went on to huge commercial success (Maiden, Def Leppard etc), some had brief glimpses of chart/tour glory, many of them never really "made it" but have at least made a living and are still around or have re-formed in the last few years.
But what I'm not seeing any more is todays Maidens and Leppards. With the possible exception of the Darkness, who did get the burst of success but are all in their 30s and been knocking around on the tour scene for years.
So where are they? Are the youth of today no longer bashing out powerchords in their bedrooms? A lot of the live music venues I used to frequent are still there, but the bands they are booking are either the same bands that they were booking 20 years ago or youngsters over from the US.
I dunno if what I am looking for is "underground". I've always thought I had fairly wide taste in music ( I love the Hard-Fi album too!) and I'll listen to anything with an open mind and open ears. It just seems that there's nothing to listen to any more. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

I see Coldplay as the New Order of Tomorrow, and Robbie Williams as the Frank Sinatra of tomorrow.
Just because the style is different doesn't mean they aren't out there, if we stayed in the same style of music forever it would become stagnent! |

Britain did go through a mini rock revolution about 3 years ago, but mainly consisted of American bands.
Bands like SOAD, Metallica and also Maiden are still going on. But you gotta understand times have changed. Pop has taken over and all songs are the same, people don't appreciate their own produced music these days, it has to be done by some tanned blonde haired guy composing a "choon" on eJay. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Songs for download on here. They are an old school rock band. Steve (the songwriter) would describe them as 'geek rock' but thats only cos he also wrote the website!
You may say I am biassed, because my Sister is the other guitarist... but personally I think they rock, and could go a long way.
As a slight aside, I heard that record companies have to burn any demo CD's or tapes sent to them, in case they release a song and one of the people who sent in a demo claims a similarity with their song.
Fooking litigation culture! That will probably be why there aren't too many bands that aren't manufactured!! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F

I'm also going to stick up for music snobs.
The vast majority of successful mainstream rock music is vocally driven. The guitars underneath mostly play simple chord progressions that would be boring to listen to on their own. The simple fact is that most people listening to music are only actually paying attention to the singing and the basic drum pattern. This is not so true of metal, but there are still examples of this.
Take Iron Maiden - I'm not a massive fan of theirs but I have a few albums. Their record 'Powerslave' is early in their career and is full of complex riffs, twin guitar leads, and fantastic solos. However only a few years later they switched to a vocally-orientated style. Take 'Seventh son of a seventh son' for example; on that album the majority of guitarwork is basic chordal melodies which serve only as a backdrop for the singing. That record is also very overproduced, which is another trademark of commercial music.
The reason why I do not like many 'big' bands is because there are very few big successful bands that employ decent guitar work and don't rely on saturated production for their sound. The other thing I do not like is that most rock bands today rely on false 'emotion' to hook in the listener. Yes the underground scene may be pretentious, but at least the bands are not contrived ____________________ Hard livin', hard luck. |

Something I *really* don't get is the whole 'Emo is bad' vendetta most people seem to have. Someone said earlier about people listening to new Green Day stuff and using Daddy's credit card to go buy black stuff....well, if I want new clothes I go earn the cash in my shitty fast-food job and buy them myself!
I like emo music, on the whole. It's good. Just a handful of people ruin my fun by dressing like utter spanners and acting like their life sucks just because their music dictates that life isn't worth living etc. It gets so much bad press, and it's really not that bad, some of it. Suddenly, emo kids are being grouped with chavs as being a national disease
Surely music's there to be enjoyed, and it doesnt matter what other people think?

So I think what this boils down to Babyyam is that you're just too old and 'past it' to appreciate modern music. |

It isn't a vendetta against the music, it's a vendetta against the pretentious faggots who broadcast their misery to the world. Hell, they can listen to Steps for all I care, but as a rule they listen to equally downbeat, depressing music. Nothing wrong with that, but they like to make sure people know they're communicating with this sad music because they're so depressed and so fed up of life, and oh dear I seem to have slit my wrists in a fit of depression.
God I hate them. |

Your whole post was good apart from that comment. They have been around for well over 15 years now and they have only really gone commercial in the past year since American Idiot (It's actually an alright album) was released. They switched recod companies to get a bit more airplay, therefore loads of kids heard the band so now you get a lot of teenage girls going "Oh Billie Joe is so hot, blah blah blah" On the whole though Green Day are very uncommercialised and challenge society, something very true of most true punk bands. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Very true, I knew that. Perhaps it should have been 'an excellent band, who have now become mainstream'. I know they probably didn't choose to have the sort of attention they now have, whether they wanted it or not. But I must admit, it's harder to like them as a band when every jumped up little twerp is playing his brand new CD of 'International Superhits'. |
