Years ago, when I was young and ideallistic I would have leapt to the defense of a down trodden minority.

As i've grown older, and more world weary, I take people as I find them, and I find that most people aren't worth taking.

I've yet to come across a gypsy family, that didn't royally piss me off, and yet to see a gypsy camp not leave a trail of damage and refuse in their wake when they move on.

Travelers arrived and set up camp in Stevanage, the council did not bother to try and move them on as it takes so long . What they did was to surround the camp with concrete bollards so that no-one could leave. This meant that they could not get their vans out to go to "work". They left of their own free will very quickly.

They (Irish ones) count themselves as a sort of race or nation and accordingly get funding from the Irish government. I myself am Irish (I hear that UK insurance companies are wary towards Irish bikers regarding them as reckless and less likely to have training). They built some palatial houses in odd places like near industrial estates, presumably for the access and caravan space. One room is furnished lavishly and the remainder empty. Around are various mobile homes, where they live. Needless to say, they get plently of welfare. Barring them from pubs is counted as discrimination, regardless of the damage and feuds they carry on. Recently near where I am, they took over most of the local park land, trashed it, and left suddenly. Horrible people.

i used to work in a solicators office and they had a whole sections of claims they had put in against people to try and get money! a whole fecking massive filling cabinate for them! no one would represent them but the ones i worked for. same as my school no one would take them apart from my school.

i am also irish thinkingaboutit and i feel ashamed that we are tarred with the same brush sometimes.

A few months back before I changed my job, some gypo's moved onto wasteland just across the road from my building, and a colleague of mine got attacked by the scum and had his arm broken they managed to steal his locker key. Apparently the police sorted them and put down their 7 vicious dogs lmao not really justice though, they'll go and make someone elses life a misery.

There was a story years ago, of a farmer who shot nearly a whole camp of gypsie's dead in the valleys

Down my way we never have a problem with them because they get firebombed out within a day or two. They've learnt this, they dont bother.

they have been round here lately, covering the villiage greens in litter and caravans, stealing everything, trying to buy my car and not being at all pleased when i told them it wasnt for sale. Getting nasty with locals who dont want them to tarmac their drives. The usual really. Anyone who thinks saying these "gypsies" should all be thrown in the sea is racist, has clearly never encountered one. I have no problem with their race, its thier attitude, lifestyle, and general lack of care for anyone but themselves that bugs me.

They were a nightmare round the South Reading industrial estates when I worked there. I remember them even taking up residence in the Hewlett Packard car park one day. When they were in the general area, nothing was safe. I remember both me and my ex (who also used to work in the same area) having to share the car into work, because it wasn't safe to leave bikes parked there (would rather have got the car stolen/trashed than my bike).

IMO they're scum. Rotten, filthy spongers who think nothing of intimidating the locals, and leaving a trail of destruction behind for the likes of us to pay to get cleared.

while i agree that many gipsies are bad news some of the views expressed here are a bit harsh.

For instance the other day i drove past a gypsy camp that had 3 wooden wagons, and a couple of hourses (all tethered) with not a bit of rubbish in site.

We also had a group of gypsies living on a plot of landf near us a few years back and again they were very plesent people to deal with.

however i do agree that for thoses that wish to sponge of the state then as far as i am conserned they can go to hell!!

You have to make a distinction between gypsies who are a seperate Romany race and Irish travellers, who are as someone said earlier a social group.

When you fill out forms that ask for ethnic origin they have put on "Irish Traveller" as a seperate category even though they are obviously no racially different from the general Irish/UK population.

Those forms are a complete mess of nationalities/ethnicities anyway so completely pointless.

I live in London and can honestly say ive never had any encounters with gypsy/traveller groups so dont really have an opinion on them.

Was in Ireland though recently and talking to the locals they generally have the same low opinion of them as the posts in this thread.

i think there a case for supporting giving them an education if u hate their ways.

Some of their kids might want to have more conventional lives and it would be easier for that to happen if there is some provision made.

Eventually the lifestyle might die out as they all get houses and become more civilised.

Whether it is worth the extra money that will probably be asked, is another question.
