perhaps a less 'inflamatory' tactic would be to send a company-wide e-mail reminding users that their e-mails can be monitored and any that contravene company policy on porn, harrasment, racism etc. can be escalated to HR for them to deal with according to the company's disciplinary procedure. that way, it's a heads up to those involved and a subtle reminder to all that they are being monitored

Depends on your IT policy, how it is worded, but at some point every employee has some right to privacy, mad really.

I dont think its bad to bring it to someone's attention, its blatant enough that they are happy to do it via a messenger system, which they must be fairly thick to not realise it is logged somewhere.

If you are sending the emails, using the company's computer, with the company's email address, and the company's sig at the bottom, which is then sent and received via the company's network and email server, then it could be argued that there is a loose parallel with writing personal letters on headed paper.

if you want to send personal emails, then use a personal email system. Keep them separate.. it's what I do.
