As for the carbs, well they are a bit weird, both carbs share a common carb top. I'm think of buying a set of 31k carbs and using them!
What is the thinking on throttle cables? On mine the return cable has been removed!

Because when I used the 'metal ready' it dissolved all of the rust, which also dissolved the seams in the tank, and the resultant holes were too large for the POR15 to fix...

Ok thanks for the heads up!

Would a TZR250 tank fit? I know where there is one available.

Sorry to push you on this, and, please, don't take this the wrong way, but do you think this was down to the product itself, or the way you used the product?

TZR is a very different bike. I would be VERY surprised if the tank fitted the RD.

All the best

Sorry Sid,

Basically the problem is that the product was not up to fixing a tank with more rust than metal in the seams. They claim that it will fix large holes in fuel tanks, but that isn't borne out by my experience. I followed the instructions to the letter, and yet the tank still leaked afterwards. Perhaps it will fill one large hole when you use the piece of fiberglass sheet that they give you, but my tank was like a pepper pot.

The only way to sort a tank like this is to get someone who knows what they are doing to remove the bottom and replace it, pretty much. Apparently there are places out there who do it, but I can only find one in the UK and they seem to want to seal the tank with their product too.

{edit} Its also probably worth noting that I used just the marine clean and metal ready parts of the POR15 kit on my FZR400 tank which wasn't rusted through, it just had some surface rust on the inside and it worked like a charm. The problem arises when the tank seams are rusty, and the metal ready removes the rust, effectively removing the seams.

For anyone with the same bike, having spent ages "googling" for the correct gaskets and finally ordering a couple of sets from Australia, I have been, reliably, informed by "Norvo", at "LC CRAZY", that he stocks them!

(Insert facepalm of choice here).

Its Norbo, and he can't spell for toffee, but he's a really nice guy and he knows his onions! He became my new best friend during the time I was rebuilding my bike!

Hopefully he's a bit more communicative than "Yambits.
I've got a, fairly pricey, list of parts I've been trying to order from them, three emails later and two weeks later and I still haven't had a reply! Evil or Very Mad

I'm in Cyprus!

The thing is i've used "Yambits" before, never had a problem.
I have around 15 parts I want to order, i'm not prepared to hit the "Buy it now" button for each one then get stung for the individual postage per item. Al I want to know is what the total P&P wil be.
All the parts I need are relatively small, they would all fit in a large jiffy bag.
I'd prefer to buy all the bits from one retailer, rather than make 4 or 5 individual orders.

Thanks for the offer though!

Yes, as it happens!

First, I got another tank from Ebay, unfortunately when it arrived it was not the correct tank, the original tank is on the right:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/tanks02.jpg

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/tanks01.jpg

Turns out the tank's from a TZR 125, I did ask the seller about the tank and he insisted it was from an 350 YPVS. CBA raising a dispute, so if anyone needs a TZR 125 tank make me an offer, bear in mind it'll cost £40 to post from Cyprus.
If anyone's got a tank for sale I'm in the market!

If I can't get a second hand tank, does anyone know where I can have an alloy tank made!

I've cleaned and painted the second hand barrels I bought, bores are immaculate as are the pistons that came with them.

I finally got my order with YAMBITS sorted, and I'm waiting on the following to arrive in my post box:-

Rear brake switch
Rear brake bleed nipples
Front brake bleed nipples
Carb inlet rubbers
Hy-Tech reeds
C- spanner
Dip stick
Fork dust seals
Fork oil seals
Rear master cylinder repair kit
Front brake light switch
Power valve seal kit

Despite having a leaky tank, I managed to get it running a few weeks ago, (once I'd flicked the kill switch). Embarassed
Once I've fitted the parts listed above, and made sure everything works, I'll be stripping the bike down to a bare frame, bending the RHS exhaust mount back into place then seeing if I can find someone to do the nickel plating for the frame.

To be honest it's too hot to be doing anything at the moment, it's more an autumn winter hobby really, i'll get stuck into it properly towards the end of Sept, when the temperature drops a bit.

Haven't been doing nothing though, made a mount for my video camera and i've been doing some minor repairs to the NSR's fairings. I also managed to source a second hand set of CDI's for the NSR as well, for when the current ones pack in.

25/09/11

My plans to have the frame nickel/chrome plated have been scuppered, apparently there is only one place that does chrome plating here. According to the people I’ve spoken to, they don’t make a very good job of it, with wear showing within a year. So I’ve decided to get the frame powder coated gold, been quoted 170 Euro, for sandblast and powder coat.

I’ve acquired a few parts over the last couple of months:-

Got this lot a while ago, barrels, pistons and reed blocks, now cleaned and repainted:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RENEWEDPARTS.jpg

Picked this lot up a couple of weeks ago for 120 Euro, head barrels, pistons, powervalves and reed blocks, all sand blasted. There is quite a lot of pitting on one cylinder head, will have to try and polish that out.

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RZR%20250/SANDBLASTPARTS.jpg

Got this little lot from YamBits last month, fork oil and air seals, powervalve seal set, new inlet rubbers, brake bleed nipples, Hytech reeds, front and rear brake light switches, rear brake master cylinder repair kit and a C-spanner!

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/YAMBITSPARTS.jpg

Anyway, between thunder storms, this weekend, started to strip everything off the bike, et voila, we now have a rolling chassis.

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/ROLLINGCHASSIS.jpg

Got the engine into the shed, before more rain arrived, so thought I’d have a look at the head, here it is after 5 minutes work with a plastic kitchen scourer. I did take a before picture but it dissappeared:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/HEADCLEANED.jpg

The piston tops look a tad coked up, mind you I was running premix when I was bleeding the oil pump so it was getting a lot of oil last time I ran it:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RZR%20250/COKEDPISTONS.jpg

In honour of removing the engine I thought I better tidy my shed a bit, not too much though!

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/SHED01.jpg

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/SHED02.jpg

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/SHEDO3.jpg

Thunder storms finally subsided, this afternoon, but left us with no electricity for a couple of hours, so I packed it in and took the dog for a walk.

I'll get everything else apart next weekend, got plenty of other jobs I can be getting on with before then!

Now reduced to this:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RZR%20250/frame02.jpg

Gave it a quick clean, will be contacting the powder coater soon.

Yet another petrol tank on the way, fingers crossed it's the right one this time!

Well I fianally got a tank.
It arrived a couple of weeks ago, I knew it had a couple of dents, so as long as it is leak free it should do the job.
The tank had a shallow dent about the size of the palm of your hand right on top just in front of the filler cap. There was a smaller dent near the seam at the front, and another, very small, dent on the top.

It looked a lot worse than it was, paint had cracked in concentric rings around the largest dent.

This afternoon I set about removing the paint. There was about 2mm of paint, I could pull chunks of it off around the dent.

All in all there were four different paint schemes, lying dormant.
At the bottom of the heap was the orignal white and red, over that someone had painted some dayglow pink, on top of that there was a layer of orange, and on top of that was the yellow you see in the photo.
Considering the amount of paint, I decided to go with the electric drill and wire brush method of removal. it took about an hour and a half to get it all off.
It was a bit scary really because these tanks seem to rust for fun, so the chances of making a hole with the wire brush are quite high. As luck would have it there was no rust, so all good.

Large dent:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RZR%20250/tank01.jpg

All dents:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RZR%20250/tank02.jpg

Paintless

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/RZR%20250/tank03.jpg

Once the paint had been removed I gave it a wipe over with some thinners the filled the dents with filler, which is now drying.

A satisfying couple of hours work, but I hate rubbing down body filler.

In other news, forks are dismantled, waiting for parts before I can re assemble though.
Rear brake master cylinder has been rebuilt.
Frame should be going off to the powder coaters' next week.
Also waiting on steering head bearings.

Well, here's the latest progress on my project.

My fuel tank now looks like this:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104TANK.jpg

I'm not happy with the dent I filled, it's still not quite the right shape, going to add some more filler soon.

Got the head, barrels and power valves off, here's a before and after comparison:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104BEFOREAFTERBARRELS.jpg

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104OLDNEW.jpg

Here's everything after cleaning painting and polishing:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104BARRELSPAINTED.jpg

I've been using a heat resistant enamel paint, (mega shiny), which requires a primer, I've been brush painting these parts.

Same heat resistant enamel on the radiator:-

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104RADPAINT.jpg

And the same with the engine cover, had to have two goes at this before I got a decent finish. It's not a good photo there's a lot of reflection, from the flash, around the gear selector hole

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104CASEPAINTED.jpg

Here are the side panels and front mud guard, forgot to take any before pictures.
Both side panels were cracked, I repaired them by cutting out thin strips of metal, gluing them to the back of the panels, then fibre glassing over them.
The left hand panel had a chunk missing out of the bottom corner at the back. I used the same process to repair it, shaped piece of metal, fibreglass and filler.
They're painted with a rattle can, and have come out really well.
Haven't started on the lacquer yet, I'm still pondering on a design.

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104PANELSPAINTED.jpg

Got some new end cans, the originals were too far gone.
Apart from anything else I've shaved about 5lbs of the overall weight. Cool
I'll have to have some spacers made up as the new cans are a lot smaller in, overall, diameter than the originals and there's not enough room to drill new holes in the pipes.

https://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/Troodos-Pool-Guy/2104NEWCANS.jpg

I'm still waiting on the powder coaters, Evil or Very Mad , he's still waiting for his new workshop to be wired up, but he assures me it'll be sorted in a couple of weeks. Rolling Eyes

I pulled one of the forks apart, a while ago, and the PO had butchered the surface of the seal seat. I've had ago at smoothing everything out with some instant metal, but I'm not holding my breath.
