The Artist - Would you recommend that PokerStrategy site you harked about a while ago (seem to remember you getting $50 free from them)? Have let my poker knowledge slip of late and thinking of getting back into it, but this time I want to come back with strategy, so is it worth spending a few hours trawling over?

Yes and no. The strategy they suggest is standard tight aggressive which is was 80% of players use. You can pick tight or loose and aggressive or passive. I usually play a fairly loose aggressive game. I would say read through it, play some micro stakes 2c/5c cash game. Don't bother with 1c/2c because it is crap and no one plays properly with less than $2 in front of them. Play how they say and adjust to how you feel. The more you play, the more you will develop your own style.

Party poker.com?

Pokerstars for learning IMO because the software is so good, the range of games is massive and there is always 200k+ people on there. Partypoker is ok but their are not many games and not many players.

You can risk 1c or $1million. The lowest cash game buy in is $0.80 but playing with so little is harder for a beginner. Lowest tournament buy ins are 1c upwards but as you can imagine, a 1c tournament is a joke and it is just all in's and lots of luck. Below about $3 buy ins, the selection of players is not very good. They are weak players mostly and it will be down to luck a lot of the time. I say, start low and see how you feel.

Play money is a totally different game. No one plays properly. It is impossible to play poker in the traditional sense without stakes.

People say "oh lets just have a fun game of poker" and I ask how much and they say "oh nothing, lets just play for fun!"

Well it isn't because no one cares. Laughing As a game without stakes it is fairly boring. It is like playing blackjack or something.

I agree, money, real money that means you buy a new car or makes your wife divorce as she can'y feed the kids you is the only way to score in a poker game. Without the cash it is just a game of snap.

Well not really, but I see what you mean as there's no actual risk of losing anything therefore you'll be more reckless than a real game..

I try and play like I've bought my chips though and to go below 400 is a loss to me, there are the occassional tossers who join a game with 180 chips and go all in straight away.. Generally though people seem to play okay and it's definetly helped me get the basics.

I'm having a poker night later with some lads from work, either 2 £2.50 games or 1 £5 game. Anything you reccommend to keep it running smoothely?

Nice one, think I'm plenty stocked with those and I'll ring for the bitches later Thumbs Up

I'm reading through hand rankins, and next to the four of a kind it says
Quote:
Any four cards of the same rank. If two players share the same Four of a Kind, the bigger fifth card (known as the kicker) decides who wins the pot.

How is this possible? If I have Ace four of a kind no one else can share the same four of a kind? Does it mean if two players have both acheived a four of a kind, say one has Jacks and one has nines, the kicker decides it? because surely 4 jacks beats 4 nines? Confused

The aim of poker is to make the best hand with any 5 cards out of the 5 on the board and 2 in your hand.

e.g.

Board comes J J J J 4
and you have A 3
and you opponent has K 6
You win because your best hand is J,J,J,J,A

It is unlikely you will have a hand with Four of a kind because they are kind of rare.

It can get confusing with counter fitted two pairs though.

e.g.

board comes

4 6 6 7 7

you hold 10,4
your opponent holds A,K

They would win this hand because their best 5 card hand is 7,7,6,6,A
Yours is 7,7,6,6,10

There is no such thing has 3 pair.

Thing with poker is you got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them.
Know when to walk away, and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sitting at the table,
There'll be time enough for counting when the dealings done.

when you deposited real money on the poker stars did you have to put your passport details and driver license details in?

Just tried to add some to become eligible for those freeroll things and it is asking for loads of crap lol!

Yes. It is to stop money laundering and stuff. Otherwise you could deposit a grand, transfer it to someone else and they could withdraw it with no actual proof of who they are.

Stars is 100000x better than any other site. 88 is awful and there are so few players and so few choice of games.

888 just seems a better layout, what tournaments you can enter etc seems more obvious.
Also not too keen on passport and drivers license details to put a tenner on..

Say you've put a tenner in, and got a tenner free, once you work your way up to £100 quid where do you stand?
Do you owe them 10 or how do they work it out?

The deposit bonus is bollocks mainly. You don't just get double your deposit. Same as any other decent site. I know 888 give away £5 free to new members. How do you think they manage to get people to play there.

There is a reason 888 has a few hundred players on at once and Stars has over 200,000 always.

I don't see how it isn't obvious. Click the tournament tab, then click the filter button and pick what sort of tournaments you are interested in. If you look at them all, you will be overwhelmed because there are loads starting every 5 minutes of the day. Filter out what sort of tournament you want and then you get precisely what you are looking for.

well all I'm saying is I found it easier to negotiate and get comfortable with a few games

will give the filter tab ago when I get back on.

What do you mean the deposit bonus is bollocks?
So do you keep any winnings you make off the 'bonus' or does it stop you from removing it from your account?

The way I look at it is, I deposit £10, I have £10 to play with and whatever I win I keep. You get random, $10 bonuses here and there the more you play based on rake. The bonuses go up and up but it takes time. Most I got was $50.

Don't expect to deposit £10 and have £20 in your account.

Also make sure you are playing in USD. 99% of the games are in USD. If you are only looking at GBP then it fails. Same with almost any other site.

Okay cheers, that's what I was thinking, didn't know if the winnings from that bonus would be unavailable or w/e.

Yeah I have been playing in dollars, are the freerolls you have access to any good? /do you stand any chance of winning or is it just about gaining the experience with that small chance of free monies?

TBH I can't stand playing micro stakes anymore. People don't care as much about $2 as they would with $10 or more. Their play is exploitable but I enjoy slightly higher stakes. Free rolls are like play money until about 50% of the field is gone. Then the less players, the better the quality of poker. In reality free rolls are more luck than anything.
