Hi Binge,
Just a question, what will those new tyres do to your gearing, and will it cause any problems?

Steve, any bigger than 31 and it's either jack it up like a chav territory, or do a virtual lift, which I can not be fucked to do.

Current gearing is extremely short because of the set up. So going to 31's will just make it more like a normal SJ413. If it's too tall, I can do the rock crawler/lobster mod to my T-box to bring the ratio down again.

All fitted up.

Gearing is noticeably taller. Seems to drive okay though. Will see how it performs on Saturday in the mud.

Bit of scrubbing on the front end as you lock it left and right. I've folded the seams around the bulkhead completely flat, and it's just clearing at the moment. Will probably have to lift the body by 1", and need to do something with the sagging rear springs.

A friend of mine has a jet Black SJ413, 2" body lift, 4" susp lift, and 31" tyres. he is a funeral director and drives the thing to work in his suit. It looks like one of the Wacky Racers parked along side a fleet of black cars and a Hearse.

Took my SJ to work today. All seems well. Can definitely notice the tyre difference. It requires a bit more balls to get up Dettling Hill now. I think a bit of carb tuning will sort it though as it's making most of its power at the upper end of the rev range.

Took it out last night with my mate in the Vitara again.

New tyres are pretty good. LOADS more diff clearance, nicer ride too (softer). But I just don't think they give as much feel as the BF Goodridge tyres I had.

If you're serious about getting a green laner, the cheapest route would be to get a Vitara.

SJs and Vitaras (relatively standard ones) tend to fetch between £400 and £600 in road worth condition. But for that figure, you'll get a much better quality of Vitara than you will of SJ.

Decent trucks, SJ's fetch quite good money. The other issue is, they are a lot more temperamental than the Vitara. They're on average, a good decade older!


Today, I changed my steering wheel over to a dished drifter wheel as the old flat wheel was a bit of a thumb snapper!
The new wheel is about 1.5" dia bigger too, making it slightly easier to steer being non PAS.

I'm thinking about just buying an old rotter of a Vitara for £200, and looting everything from it, engine, PAS, front brakes, Master cylinder and servo etc, to stick on the SJ.

Is it the 75bhp Swift 1.3 engine your rocking at the moment in her? I've read that a few people have put the G13B twin cam head onto a 1.6 Vitara bottom end to make a 1.6 Swift Gti.

I think your motor would love a Bini cooper S blower and 4-5psi though!

Yeah I am currently running the Swift GS engine, but I've a feeling it's cam'd differently to the SJ413 engine (Both G13a) as it seems to make all of it's power really high in the rev range.

My next big mod is to fit a pair of modified SJ Samurai axles as they are around 5" wider. I've already got a rear axle, just need to get a front.
The get them on, the spring seats need moving in 40mm each, and the prop flanges need re-drilling for the 410 shafts.

Because the axles are wider, but spring seats are moved in for the 410 springs (They sit closer together than Samurai springs), it gives loads of leverage when off road, and flexes up extremely well.

The only issue is the diff ratios are taller than the current 410 axles, meaning even less torque. 1.6 Vitara engine goes in pretty easily now, especially as I have already changed the mounts. All I'd need to do is buy an adapter plate for the gearbox, or do a bit of modding to the bellhousing bolt holes.

Bought a winch today off a mate. It's no 'superwinch' or 'warn', but it's okay and it works. 12,000 lbs pull capacity (about 5 tons?). Just racking my brains where/how to mount it. I want it inside the bumper really.

Also trying to figure out the best way to wire it. It's got a bit of a loom with it. A bit messy and chopped about. I think I am going to start over.

It's got the controller / solenoid box. No switch gear though.
Was hoping I could just wire the controller box to a 3-way rocker switch on my dashboard? And then a big fat isolator switch under the dash somewhere, easy to get to, for the main live. That way I can fully operate the winch from the drivers seat.

Peoples views?

Never really been into off-roading, apart from "Wow that looks cool" but some of the stuff here is making me want to try it. It does seem to require a large amount of time and money though!

My mate recons wireless winch remote is the best way, you can watch the truck as you winch it if needed

If you're happy with light green laning, then you can get away with a near-standard Vitara for well under a grand.



Ref the winch. It's all fitted and working. Only running off a switch in the cab at the moment. Going to get myself a wireless plug-in if it works well.

Didn't get to use the winch but very nearly had to rescue to guys from a rolled truck. We climbed up one byway which was excessively muddy from the rain. His truck slipped a rear wheel nearly over the edge of a 20/25ft ledge but luckily he managed to get back up onto 4 wheels and drive to safety. Scary stuff watching it from the outside, last time that happened to me in a similar situation, I was in the truck, and the thing rolled 4 times with me and the O/H in it.


A pal came out with me today, brought his GoPro along, so will have some footage later on.

Tried it, not keen.

Maybe I'm boring, who knows. I just don't like the thought of putting myself in danger like that.
Because of the clay ground around here, our byways are elevated (Pilgrims Way). They were made like this to stop them going too soggy when they were originally used.

Unfortunately the drops off the edges are very steep, and pretty damn high too. I've already rolled one truck in broad daylight and it was an experience I wont forget. Absolutely no fucking way I want to do that at night.

A friend of mine went out at night by himself, got stuck with both front wheels over the edge of a 20 odd foot drop with no phone signal. Tried winching it back for hours but eventually had to give up.

He drove straight off the edge managed to keep it wheels down but crashed at the bottom though a hedge and a brick wall into a farmers garden.

Turned out there was no-one there and still no mobile signal so walked to the nearest village, managed to find a phone and got a lift home.

Early next morning he went to get the truck back and the police were there waiting. Hes now getting sued to the tune of £30000 for damages, oh and his truck is wrecked.

Went out to it the other morning. Drivers door handle snapped off in my hand. Damn frost!
Put a wanted on the SCUK forum, guy posted me one out free-of-charge, very nice of him!
Waited the week for it to arrive, and he's sent me another broken handle. Some sort of sick joke? aha

So ordered a new handle, didn't realize they were so cheap, and easily available.

Hoping it stays road worthy in case we get any snow.

Had a little fuck around today while I was airing the tyres back up for road use next week and decided to push it to it's limits.
Stupidly forgot that when you want to bring the lift back down, it goes up another 6" to release the air-locks before coming down. OOPS!
Luckily, with a bit of cringing, it didn't topple over.
