Radio 4 hasn't shut up about it all day. To the point it's getting boring now.

Is this something that happened in the past (i.e. around 2010) or just recently?
He always struck me as being Blair II, and felt certain he would spin his way to PM. As it was, Ed (backed by the unions) beat him for leadership very narrowly, and he flounced off to the US or something.

I always thought (still think) he'll be back. Turning on the Blair charisma would make him the ideal successor when they realise Sir Keir as PM is as dull as dishwater.

All this report does is confirmed what we already knew. He lied, he broke the rules he implemented and he is not fit to run the country and never was fit to run the country.

Portillo lost in 97' and then they stuffed him back in a safe seat as they thought he might be a future leader...

now he just does interesting train programs so if the party elite think a certain person is a winner , they'll always find them a way back in

I always liked PortaLoo and thought he might be a good PM.
But he is touched regularly by a man so maybe that drew the rug from under him.
Not sure if he was a Rock Hudson prior to the selection process.
Mrs. Thatcher (The Milk Snatcher) did take him under her wing.
Being a Jobbie Jabber may have been abhorrent to her so plans were put in place.

Leader we deserved etc?

Could have been Corbyn. That would have been scary because he actually meant to do everything he said he would.

If you set how much wealth our country has produced over the last hundred years isn't it scary just how poor we as a people are? The scary stuff had already been done and quite deliberately as well.

Just to play devil's avocado he was good as London mayor. Didn't do any work as such but an excellent figurehead in a position that, at the time, wasn't too dangerous.

He was a buffoon, the rest of the country laughed at him, hell most of the country laughed at him, how many times was he on the front page of the tabloids in a various idiotic pose?

Indeed he was a buffoon, but I think that's why lots of people voted for him. He wasn't a serious politician so in that sense he was a change from the norm. However he was also an arrogant, lying bell-end who thought people should believe whatever he said due to his 'breeding'.

Sadly I think he will be back in some capacity. Either that or he'll die of a heart attack pretending to be running or cycling whenever he senses a television camera.

Maybe we did but London tourism isn't chump change. Ken and Boris had international visibility and definitely contributed to people round the World coming to London.

"But he's an embarrassment!" Then I suggest you cry yourself to sleep at night on a mattress stuffed with fivers. That's what the Hospitality industry used to do prior to Genghis Khan.

Qualitatively: wealth.

If you want a quantitative number then I suggest you look at two metrics for starters: wage stagnation (maybe since the '70s) and inflation i.e. stealing all the non-asset wealth.

Interesting thoughts. Considering the relative wealth of this country over the past 400 years... and the plundering of other countries resources, you'd think the average Brit would be more well off. Or maybe potholes might be fixed at the least? Seems it was all funnelled into the pockets of the few.

Of course WW2 didn't help. Any wealth we had became a debt to the US. Helping them to achieve their current dominance. They have the same disparity issues though. That's Capitalism I guess and those that benefit from it are reluctant to give it up.

Capitalism is a terrible system with which to organise society but it at least creates wealth (which none of the other systems tried so far have managed.)

You'd have to ask an economist whether there's a natural tendency in a prosperous stable society for wealth to accumulate in hard assets where it does no work gold being the obvious example. But there's no "seems" about it recently; wealth was transferred wholesale from the middle and lower classes with the 2008 crash and Covid by envious elites dismayed at all the wealth in the hands of "the wrong people" i.e. the plebs.

"Hah! So much for Capitalism!" Like all stable systems there's a tendency towards stagnation and corruption and what would you corrupt Capitalism with? Socialism Rolling Eyes

We are well off, even the people who aren't. You should visit some other countries. Even supposedly first world ones.

The only countries I've visited where people seem better off on the whole than in the UK have been nordic/scandi countries.

Indeed, Everyone's got a mobile, central heating, running water, very cheap food available at every shop

What more is there to have? wallet full of cash that will be eaten up by inflation? live like you did in the 70's and you'll probably have more cash

Alot of people at the moment are whinging because mortgage rates have gone up, why the bloody hell have they pegged themselves to such a massive mortgage in the first place, it's just greed, they were no doubt happy offering above the asking price when buying said properties.

354 votes in favour of the privilege committee's recommendation and 7 against. That'll sting a little....
