Suzuki RG 125 - now with a picture!

Hi people,

A mate of mine has just bought a Suzuki RG125 and I have agreed to pick it up for them as they only have a CBT and dont want to ride accross London on a bike they are unsure on.

Ive seen a picture but I dont know anything about these bikes, Ive tried searching on here but nothing useful comes up.

Can anyone tell me what they are like to ride? Ive got a commuter 500cc so will a 125cc sports pose any problem?

You'll have to slip the clutch a lot... apart from that you should be fine.

Oh, if you see lots of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, dont worry , just say to him " it was like that when i got it "

Try to avoid traffic hotspots such as Oxford Street, Camberwell Road, A41 Baker street etc as stop start traffic flow won't be a good idead on a bike you're not familiar of. You'd be very wary of courier riders all the time as you might see one in your mirrors a tad too soon.

I commute around London everyday so I dont mind the traffic, will most likely go up Hyde Park corner/Park Lane/Oxford Street so its just the bike that worries me a bit, having never ridden one with a fairing.

Am starting at Oval so have time to acclimatise before heading up to Hendon.

Which model is it, if its the Gamma that’s the one I owned & is really nice, but susceptible for the engine to implode.

If it’s the Gamma F, then that’s a little more reliable (I hear)

Nice bike to ride, when I had mine years ago I really liked the 9k power band, with another at 13k. And finally power goes at 16k just a little beyond the red line... Hmmm maybe that’s why mine had a few engine issues???

Also depending on the model (I had a H Reg - 1991) there were a few starting issues when cold, wd40 in the right places did the trick though.

Nice bike though... Lots of fun to be had.

All my mate has said is that its a RG125 Fun (is that a model? Or should it have been Faired?) and its a 1992 bike.

if it the '92 model it'll be the Gamma F. Suzuki made a LOT of changes when they introduced the F (fun???).

more power from the engine, better forks, redesigned frame. generally a much better styled bike.

Id rarther take an RG125Gamma, than an RG125FUN, just for the engine reliability! The early engine is less powerful, but does'nt eat the powervalves when worn, like the RG125F/RGV250 engines do.

Well rode the bike back up, donno what I was concerned about really - felt just like being back at my CBT on a 125!

Ive attached a pic, as you can see its a stunning looking bike.

There is one problem though, the guy warmed it up for me and it was idling fine, but after awhile whenever I pulled the clutch in as I was coming to a stop the revs would drop and the engine would die, after a minute or two it would come back to life but it did that a couple of times on the way back. After I figured out it wasnt the fuel or the oil I just made sure that even when i was coming to a stop and stationary it was revving and everything seemed to be ok.

Any ideas why it would do this?

My mate is well chuffed with it and already had someone ask if it was for sale!

Could be as simple as needing the tickover turned up.

Could be low on fuel, could be old fuel in the tank.

I wouldn't worry too much for the time being.

ive been watching that bike on ebay lol, stunning, and yeah i would just turn the tickover up, i had the same with my bike, sure it is a bit fast when i start it up in the morning but by the first time i stop the revs are down to normal
