PostPosted: 06:45 - 13 Apr 2002    Post subject: Crashed the RVF Reply with quote

I've just got back from the hospital after a trip to Chelsea Bridge gone very very wrong Crying or Very sad

Riding towards Chelsea Bridge along the embankment, showing the route to 2 mates on 50cc scooters, I came over one of the bridge junctions doing some 35/40 mph and turned into the right hand bend following it, all very sedately and respectfully and not at all like I usually ride. All of a sudden I feel both tyres let go and the bike starts to slide, stick out my knee to try and save it and manage to keep it upright but hit a bump in the road with my leg which drags me halfway off the bike - try to picture the following scene: me with legs still on the bike but body hanging off the right hand side arms getting dragged along the road, the bike now heading straight into the opposite lane of traffic and stright for the kerb... Next thing I know is I've thwacked the kerb sideways on while the bike (still upright at the time) flips over it and slides into a bush, after watching that I turn back to the road to see the front bumper of a car just stopping in time to avoid taking my head off.

Luckily that was all there was to it, could have been much much worse had me and the bike not made it through the gap in the opposite lane traffic. After picking myself up and checking all my bits were still attached, I went over to see what the fuck had caused the tyres to go - and found a massive puddle of what looked to be brand new motor oil.

So thank you to whoever decided to empty that all over the road, you truly made my day.

After limping the bike home I went straight to hospital, because by then by whole side where I'd hit the kerb had started to hurt really badly - and I couldn't move most of my right hand. A few hours in casualty revealed that actually I hadn't fucked myself up that badly: Snapped tendons in two fingers of my right hand (do you know how long it's taken me to type all this using just my left mitt?) from were my hand was dragged along the road and pinned my fingers back, bruised ribs with some very black swellings and same for my right ankle - but amazingly no bones broken, so I went home with just a few injections and my fingers splinted together.

The poor bike, however, did not fare so well... From what I could tell when I looked at it the right front fork leg is bent (quite a bit), the front wheel has had a bite taken out of it by the kerb, the right hand side plastics have been battered quite badly, the rear sub frame is bent off to the left (also from hitting the kerb, I should think) and the yokes don't look too good. If you want to take a look yourself I've taken some pictures and put them up at https://www.kornel.com/rvfcrash/ because I'm still high on whatever they injected into my bum at the hospital and I'm trying to avoid going to sleep - because I know full well what I'm going to wake up like.

The moral of the story? I was riding at a slow pace along what looked like a clean road surface and before I could blink I had totalled my bike and very nearly killed myself... Not the Friday night I'd planned for Rolling Eyes

Sorry to hear about mate...could your two scooter mates bear witness to everything?

Maybe you should try getting back to the scene of the crash and take a picture/video of the oil puddle...

As you have said, it's not the way that you usually ride, and that's probably just as well, right?...

These things happen, and without people knowing the real facts, they will think that it's just another biker riding dangerously on the road...damn!

Anyways, hope that you recover soon, but I'm not optimistic about the bike..?

Sorry to hear about your crash korn..What makes it 10 times worse is it wasn't your fault but no one to blame.

Them faulks look pretty bad, can they be straitend or have you got to get a new set?

I very nearly did the same thing when i hit a cats eye comming out of a bend, but pooles of oil on the road..I dont think even rossi would of stood a chance

Unless he's got comp insurance there's not much point... there's no way he'd be able to sue anyone for it. Even with comp it's unlikley to affect the insurance companies desision or reflect on the records they keep.

Anyway... hope you can get your bike on the road again soon Korn (oh yeah hope you recover soon yourself, as well)

Bent fork leg (picture taken with yoke dead center)

That dont matter because you can twist them back (loosening off the pich bolts), is it the actual stanction that is bent, if so its very hard to get them straightned??? Get well soon m8, and hope the repairs work out cheap. Along as the front wheel holds air, it dont matter that its got chip, does it??? Will you repalce the fairing with replica ones, because i know there easy to get hold of because thats quite a popular track day bike.
Hope things get better....

Sorry to hear bout that man, hope you and the bike get well soon.

Look on the bright side, at least the bike aint a complete wreck and you should be able to sue either the council of highways dept if you feel like it (and get the proof).

There's no way he'll be able to sue either of them... the only situation where he'd have a chance would be if they had been warned about the spillage and hadn't cleared it up whithin a reasonable amount of time.
