I say dilemma, but it isn't really! My grandma has offered to buy me a motorbike, but on the one condition that I buy new, as she doesn't trust any second hand vehicles...don't ask! Anyway, I'm torn between the YBR125 and the CG125 - I rode the YBR on my CBT and found it a bit dodgy with gears at time (perhaps learner induced? Embarassed ) but I liked the look - but not the silver paint - is the black hard to come by? I know very little about new CGs, not much info/pics around. Can anyone offer any advice? Much appreciated!

TBH if your only buying a 125 2nd hand is the best option. I have my test tomorrow and if i passed i'd sell it on. Very Happy

But seriously the CG is known to be bullet proof if you change oil every 1000-1500 miles providing you don't ask it to do 60 for 20 + miles 5 days a week.

I cannot speak on the YBR's as i have limited knowledge and i'm looking up than across but i'd recommend buying 2nd hand purely because you'll sell the CG/YBR on in a year and lose quite a bit of money where as 2nd hand the money will be peanuts.

try to persuade her to buy you a used one if possible, otherwise you will lose a lot of money when its time to sell up. maybe if you found an ex-demo at a main dealer she would still have peace of mind?
as for which one, well, my guess is the most reccomended one on here would be the cg, their reliability has been proven as they've been around for ever. that said though, i cant imagine the yamaha would be a bad choice either though Smile

Well a new 125 is pretty good to have because you know they haven't been destoryed by the previous owner.

And hondas don't loose to much money when you come to sell them, I have an XR125 same engine as a CG and a great bike, you can even take it off road. Search google images to see it Smile

Cheap insurance too.

I've got a YBR125 and having ridden the CG I honestly can say I couldn't really find much difference between the two bikes. Both bikes have very similar designs and features, they both perform the same too. Like you I was a novice when I tried the CG but it seemed to handle the same as my bike does. I can also assure you the gears on the YBR operate very nicely and smoothly once you become a more used to using bike gears. It's a joy to ride and I've put 420 easy miles on mine in just 10 days.

One thing to consider though, is that every single guide/forum/book on learning to ride a motorbike and choosing a 125 recommends the CG125 as it's been around for a very long time and has an impeccable reputation! This makes selling a CG an absolute breeze and they hold their value well if looked after. But as other say you will loose money when selling a new bike! It also makes finding a 2nd hand CG pretty difficult... They seem to be a bit like gold dust and sell very quickly.

Whatever you choose I hope you enjoy it! Good luck and don't forget to let us know what you end up with...

If you like the looks and attributes that the CG125 has, then i really think in your buy new only situation, that you could not do much better than a CG. As people say they are a great bike, tough, easy to ride, insure and run, and they have very good residual values and secondhand demand too!

They latest CG's are of better spec, with better instruments, and finally a decent front brake too!

TBH, i would never buy a new 125, certainly if it was my only bike, but i think the CG is your best bet if you do buy new. You could alternatively look at other 125cc bikes, but if you were thinking of spending over £3000 on a brand new sports 125, like some fools would, then id be reccomending you go and get some psychiatric help instead!

Or if you want another 4 stroke with a good rep the honda cbr has a good write up about it just go to google and type in honda cbr reviews and read what come up but as people have said the cg is bullet proof and parts are easy to come by.

Out of the couple of 125s that I rode on the CBT and DAS, I much preferred the Yamaha SR125 over the CG.

At then end of the day, will you be taking your test soon or just the CBT and then L plates?

If you are planning on taking a test, then maybe paying for a 125 now will be a waste of money (in my opinion), but would be good experience of riding on 2 wheels.

Have a sit and play on a couple to get a taster of what they feel like, not just look like Wink

I only rode a YBR for an hour, I didn't like it one bit, it was fairly new too. I had the planet at that time and it was like riding a superbike in comparison.
On the other hand I did my CBT on a SR125 and rate them quite highly.

I too was thinking of buying a new Yamaha. I went to see a second hand Honda CG and it cost £1500.

A new Yamaha is costing £1999 with free insurance and Yamaha cheque for £500 (they will give you £500 if you buy a new bigger Yamaha within 2 years). The way I see it, is if I ride my new Yamaha for say 6months, take my DAS, then part-exchange this bike for a bigger one (plus use the Yamaha cheque) Am I better off than buying second hand?

Bad idea?

I would buy 2nd hand.
I so wanted a new bike. BUt 3k for an Aprilia soon put me off (for a n125 anyway)
Get a 2nd hand one, fiddle with the gears and sell on.
Thats what Im doing anyway. Most 125s hold there money.
