Hi,

I just stumbled across the forum on google, and thought I'd better introduce myself. So umm, my names Tom at the moment I am riding a 50cc scooter and a Yamaha DT125. I am waiting to take my bike test and get a divvy or similar.

No theory test as yet. A training school in my area offer a whole package, training for the theory test and the practical. It's just a matter of saving up now.

How long have you been riding for?

I had ridden on a CBT license for about 6 months (every day) when I passed my test. All I did was a single day's training, which cost me 180 quid (including a rental bike and the practical test itself)

I passed with two minors on my first attempt...

If you've been riding for some time on your 125 perhaps you could look into doing something similar to what I've done? You seem like a sensible enough person - I'm sure you ride well. A day's training is often all that's needed to work out the kinks in your riding and the instructor should warn you of any bad habits you have.

Of course not all schools will let you do a day's training, most only offer full packages. Luckily I managed to barter with this particular school, and they were extremely helpful and supportive, they even allowed me to stay on the rental bike for another 3 hours after my training to get used to it at no extra charge.

I was planning on doing the training schools free assesment to see how much tuition I needed. I have only been riding the DT for a month, it's my cousins bike but he's out of the country so all I am paying is the insurance.

I have heard that they are reliable and they are really cheap aswell, are there any niggles with them. I.e - Things that are known to go wrong?

pretty bullet proof really, just keep an eye out on the orginal exhaust as they tend to rot. most have a 4 into 1 stainless steel Nexxus fitted which will last for years.

Should get about 66 mpg and insurance will be dead cheap as well.
Ohh and there good for 120 mph if speeds your thing.

Cool, I don't really want speed at the moment. I would rather get some experience before I handle anything to fast. I have one years experience on a twist and go, and a month on a Yammy DT 125. By the time I have done my test I will have had about 4/5 months riding geared bikes. So I will be looking for a divvy/cb/er etc as a first 'big bike.

Yup, divvy's are great first bikes. Very comfy to ride and they carry pillions and luggage very well. Also very reliable, but as far as 600's go they are on the slow and heavier side (though they are still 600cc at the end of the day so they do have a bite!).

The cheapest insurance I found on my '96 divvy was 600 quid TPFT. 18 year old male, 0 no claims, clean record, held my full license for 1 month at time of taking it out.

By phoning around I managed to knock them down to 560 quid. That was with Motorcycle Direct. If you live in a good area then you'll get it cheaper because this is quite a rough area that I live in to be honest...
