I think I already know what this is, but wanted to be sure.

A rattle at start up from cold that goes away after about 30 seconds of running is a sticky cam chain tensioner right??

It's a '99 Hornet 6 by the way.

I think your right.
When the bike is cold take out the 8mm bolt on the tensioner and put a
small screw driver into the hole.Tighten it and hold it there while you
start the bike then if it sounds alright then you know what it is.

Paddy.

thanks, but I've just noticed it does it regardless of whether it's hot or cold, it's just much more pronounced from cold.

Any ideas?

Can you try figure out where the noise is coming from in the engine.
Could it be an exhaust gasket.

top endy/back of the engine block.

i think it's always done it, i'm probably just paranoid lol. It had it's big service(clearences) about 3 months ago so wouldn't they have checked the tensioner and that during the service.

I don't think anyone would check the tensioner unless there was signs
of a problem with it.
Would the carbs need to be synchronized.
What mileage has it done.

15,900. Had the 16,000 mile service done a few months ago, that includes clearences and what not.

I was looking at the manual and I can only think it could be old or bad
fuel or the wrong plugs.
My hornet had at least 50k on it and I never did the valve clearence and
was fine.

Sorry to dig this up, but I know what's doing it!

It's the clutch. It only does it in Neutral and you pull the clutch in and it disappears, so must just be the clutch plates rattling together, like a Ducati dry clutch only less cool. Cool Lots of them do it apparently. Thumbs Up

They all do it mate, nothing to worry about Thumbs Up

Make a sort of grinding/rattling sound doesn't it? Very Happy That is if the sound it coming from the clutch housing, and only when you have the clutch out in neutral. It should stop doing it when you pull the clutch in.
