Overtaking coppers

What experiences have you had with overtaking/filtering past the pigs? I was commuting today filtering towards a set of lights, where a copper was waiting for amber. I decided to tuck in behind him, as my left rear indicator is hanging off, and my rear tyre is perhaps a little on the bald side, as well as having an open race can.

So what's the general consensus? Will they generally leave you alone for stuff like that? Eventually I overtook him in a NSL area then when out of sight buggered off down a dual carridgeway

If they are in traffic, and i can get past, i'll go passed.
They can't filter, so you're alright.

I've overtaken cops doing 85mph on the motorway.
I feel that you shouldn't act daft when you see cops, don't hide behind them, or travel in the outside lane trying to let them undertake.
If you act suspiciously they'll probably think you're not legal.

So you woulda waited up the outside of their car at the lights on the white line? then done them off the lights?

I wouldn't, I think theres a weird technicality with filtering that states you're not supposed to filter right to the front. I always do, but I wouldn't in front of a cop car, just in case.

I go past them, Have nothing to fear. I followed a copper on the way home. He was doing about 85mph. If there doing that speed then so can I - Providing im behind of course

Yeah, I thought there was a rule about "overtaking" before a pedestrian crossing, maybe they could do me for that, filtering is basically overtaking isn't it!

Even better is chasing an ambulance with it's lights on.....feel a bit like a modern day moses, with a lid on.

Put it this way, if you're on a 50cc buzzer don't even think of trying to filter past a copper on a BMW 1100 police bike!

I did this and 5 mins later he pulled me over in a bus lane, first thing he said, 'I don't mind you using the bus lane'. He then proceeded to tick me off for overtaking past a right turn junction even though it was morning rush-hour and completely gridlocked - no car was going anywhere! He threatened to give me 3 points and a fine so I just did the usual meek 'yes sir, no sir, I'll take it up the arse sir' routine. Seems to work most of the time!

I know I was technically in the wrong, but I'm convinced to this day he only pulled me coz I overtook him on a buzzer and he wasn't impressed... lol. Made me feel better knowing I had a de-restricted 'ped and hadn't done my CBT by then though. When we started off again he used the bus and cycle lane to filter to the front of the traffic and disappeared!

Police cars don't seem to care much though, now I've got a proper bike I'm overtaking them, undertaking them in bus lanes, etc, etc and they've not stopped me yet.

You're fine filtering past police cars I do it all the time, just make sure you're going and slow and smooth enough that it doesn't look dangerous and they can't complain. Oh and that rule is, if there are zig-zag white lines by the pedestrian crossing then you can't overtake the vehicle at the front of the queue, so don't let them see you doing that.

Oh and as for ambulances I was following one most of the way to work this morning, I really wanted to overtake as I knew I could make quicker progress, felt wrong to do it so I stayed behind him.

I'm always nervous of filtering past police cars too. Especially when I'm constantly doing things like overtaking in the zig zag area at Pedestrian crossing, undertaking or riding in hatched areas seperating lanes... All minor offences but ofences never the less

If you drive in a manner seen as dangerous or without due care for other road users you could get a pull.
If you have a defective vehicle you could get the same.
Filter safely and police will not bother.
Drive like a nuisance and they will have you.
If you annoy them sufficiently, they could still visit you at home and tell your mum and dad.
No law about how far up the Kyber you can filter.
Probably safer to get right to the front anyway. I always do. You get off the mark faster than any car. Just make a judgement on the traffic movement, light sequence/timing. Practice carefully.
Ped crossings, do not overtake the car at/nearest the line.
Generally, a crossing is not the bestest place to pass a vehicle. Treat it as a junction. What are we not meant to do at junctions boys and girls???
If you gub someone YOU will, most likely, get most of the blame.

Anyway, I only go out on my bike somedays just sos I can filter.

When I was coming back from Donington back in 2005 after MotoGP I was desperate for a wee on the M5 so was pacing back at quite a speed when I looked in my mirrors and there was a police car with blue flashers on. I shit myself, but they just went past me.

Moral is; you can do whatever the fuck you want in front of a Police Car sometimes.

I was once filtering behind a police bike on the North Circular, - 3 lanes of solid traffic & slow moving traffic and he was doing the obligatory 15mph....he saw me, pulled into the outside lane then waved me past, and off I went, after giving him a wave & a small toot on the horn.

No, police in general will not pay particular attention to bikes filtering.

You shouldn't go over solid white lines or overtake the lead vehicle on approach to a crossing. However you can do these 99% of the time and police really wont care as long as you are safe.

Never go to the right of a keep left arrow.

Police do not pull you over unless you come to their attention, this will be by your own doing!

I'm warey of overtaking police on single lane roads.

Filtering past them is fine, do that all the time.

I have been overtaken by police bikes whilst cruising at ~90mph on the motorway though.
