How to convert a race bike to a road bike?

I;ve met a poor bloke who is down on his luck and found he has a super super trick race bike

its been converted to pure track ie no lights indicators horn , or number plate or general road ancillaries, (but it does have a race can , some ££££££ suspension , and been big bored out and rejetted)


what do I have to do to get it on the road?


Or would my hamfisted attempts spoil the bike and break it ? , its got stuff i can't work on like carbon fibre all over the place.

What model bike is it?

To put it back to stock trim you'll have to buy all the bits that were ripped off when it was converted for the track, and probably a loom. People rarely care how they strip the stuff off so expect to find the wiring plugs for everything that has been removed cut off.

My gsxr6k1 was my last years race bike, didnt have any road going bits so had to source them all. It cost about £700 to put back into road spec, that included pastics, paint, stickers, lights etc, but well worth it when you surprise much bigger bikes away from the lights

You would be better off selling it 'as is' on ebay and using the money to buy a bike already road legal. Race bikes always sell well.

If it's got loads of carbon fibre parts then you should get a fair amount for it. That sort of stuff seems to attract 40 something year old weekend warriors like wasps to a honeypot

Does the bike have a V5 etc?
There's a lot to find to put back on, race fairings are totally different so he'll need road fairings, all lights, switchgear, horn, sidestand, standard exhaust for MOT. The speedo may not be there, or if it is it probably won't work.
I'd suggest he buys a slightly cheaper road bike, it'll be a lot less hassle in the long run.

if he gets a daylight mot, then all he needs is a numberplate and a horn, also road legal exhaust from what you've mentioned

had a look (was a tricked up RVF) was a total loss system , he decided to sell his other 4 bikes instead of this one.

See a nice looking CBR400 race bike with a daytime MOT on ebay for a fantastic price, would be a little hesitant as the MOT station near me seem a little old fashioned and I'd be worried that it would nt be renewed.

Asked the same question not that long ago as it does seem a good idea

Hi

MOT rules are a little grey on the matter. Tell you that lights must work if fitted, etc, but then mentions that lights are only required on vehicles registered after ~1931.

Although you might get an MOT suspect you could still easily get done under construction and use rules (same as an exhaust, irrespective of how quiet it is and whether an MOT tester thinks is it quiet enough, it must have the relevant markings).

There can be quite a bit of difference between a Race bike and a Track bike. Race bikes tend to be tuned, stripped bare and require more attention.

If your looking for a road bike then I suspect you'll be wanting more than a daytime MOT. In which case you could be lookings at lights, probably tyres, wiring loom, alternator, starter clutch and motor, dash, indicators, fairings.

You really need to find out what work has been done. It could get very expensive.

I had a monster exhaust on my Impreza and no one batted an eye lid, I have a race can on a bike and it will fail its MOT and get the attention of the police.

In fairness it only takes 5 mins to change the slip on can compared to the hassle needed to change a cars exhaust, and of course its more visible on a bike, so maybe thats why chavs get away with it more often than not.
