Just wondering if anyone can explain this:
The powerband on my 2000 nsr (never restricted) sometimes runs a little quick, as in, i get to about 8000rpm and then the needle flies right thru the band all the way to the red line like a shot....
I'm not losing power, its the same power if not more but i just wondered why it does this sometimes and not all the time???

Someone mentioned that 2 strokes have a very unpredictable power band, is this just a stroker thing?

Hi

Probably fairly normal. My guess is that when the revs / power does not rise rapidly it is after you have been bimbling around slowly for a bit and choked the engine up slightly. By the time you get to the next gear it is probably OK

All the best

Im my experience strokers seem to behave differently depending on how you open the throttle. On a 2 stroke you need to use the throttle more as a switch, so thats its either open or closed, as on part throttle most strokers seem to hesitate and stutter at certain speeds, like my KMX200 used to.

Hi

If properly set up (jetting wise) then you should be able to open the carb progressively. The trouble is that a normal slide carb (as fitted to every 2 squeak engine I have seen) is dependent on user skill. Open it too far for the revs you are using and it will not work properly (ie, air speed through the carb drops so low that it does not generate a drop in preasure sufficient to draw enough fuel from the float bowl).

Most big 4 strokes us CV carbs. On these the throttle opens a butterfly valve in the carb, but then the slide in the carb is itself opened by the air preasure that is also drawing the fuel from the float bowl. Slide carbs give more power but CV carbs are easier to ride (plus tend to give a far lighter throttle action)

All the best

Keith
