Looking to sell my bike sometime in the coming summer but wanted to get a rough idea of what they sell at.

I know condition and mileage have a huge impact on the price but its nice to get an idea of how much its actually worth and whether there's much point in spending a load of money doing it up, only to find its not gonna make any of it back.

Its a 1994 Honda CB500, its currently sitting at about 49.8k miles. Its been serviced at the regular intervals since I had it, its got almost new tyres, newish chain+sproket, new pads, etc. Apparently it was a school bike before I had it and looks like its been accross the floor at some point... all of the bars and handles and everything is straight and looks fairly new... The seats intact and everything else looks is really good condition.

One of my concerns is that I'd like to have a ride on the bike without the 33bhp restrictor kit... It cost me £150 to get it restricted and I'm wondering if its better to leave it and sell it like that, or remove it... I can see this bike has a bigger potential for newer riders so I'm tending to want to leave the kit on!

Gauging by bike trader, similar bikes are going for 900-1100, which is about what I was wanting to take for it... I paid 1550 for it a year and a half ago and realised then that I'd paid much more than it was probably worth but they gave me a years warranty on it which paid for a new chain and pads after they decided they should have replaced them to start with.

Its a fantastic bike to ride and to be honest I really don't wanna get rid of it... I can see it becoming a winter hack if enough spare change gets its way but I'm always interested in what options I have to play with.

Thanks for the help,
Chris

So why are you thinking of selling it?

How long have you got to go before your restriction period ends? If it's viable, I'd recommend a rquick ride out without the restrictor kit on (bit naughty, just be careful). I reckon you'll be pleasantly surprised.

bike trader prices are ALWAYS

over the top ,

they expect people to negotiate , and thus if they get a rube who pays the asking price = good for them ,

if they get haggled down to their real price then good for them

Ie stuff is only worth what people will pay for it ! ,

I'd not touch anything for that money , just look at dealer prices and knock off 20%. , CB500s may age well but 94? , my NTV was great condition before it met me , and cost me sub £500.

Doesn't end until July... I wanted to take the kit out now and spend a couple of months seeing if its worth another year.

Main reason is that I've been pissed about by so many insurance companies for changing bikes half-way through a policy... they charge me almost half the policy again just to switch for 6 months and I end up paying a stupid amount of money for a years insurance. They always come up with the excuse that the policy I'm on isn't designed for the new bike.

I want something more powerful and a bit more sporty... I'm fed up of piddling along with not enough power left to do anything usefull.

My main concern is that I renew for another year, ride unrestricted for 2-3 months, don't feel that it was worth it and have to pay a stupid amount of money again to change bikes...

At the end of the day its all the insurances fault, and the law for making me ride 33bhp... I lose out, they make lots of money... great...

Agreed... It just hurts to buy a bike and it lose so much value in a couple of years. Especially considering the money that goes into upkeep...

Definitely learned a lesson from buying bikes from dealers!

s

Tsk typical its MAN not machine that is important , there was this experiment CBR600 and Ron Haslam on a CBR125 , Ron Haslam was only seconds behind the CBR600 a story told this week at Rivvy,

A super sports will not make you a better faster rider unless you are a bike drag racer

Zzzzzz.

Also agreed, but when your stuck behind someone on the road doing 50 and you don't have enough power in a short amount of time to be able to quickly overtake it gets annoying... then when other bikes come up behind you and wonder what they hell your waiting for and just disappear I get even more annoyed.

The bike isn't really designed to be restricted... the kit tries its best but as far as I can tell it takes away my high-end power.

In all honnesty, I'm not too bothered about a really "sporty" bike.

'Borrow' a CB500 then unrestricted and have a try, ie go to a dealer and ask for a ride , you'll be considered a dreamer but its ok they mark up prices because of this ,

doing against private sellers is a no no though ,

your insurance should cover it....
