Ello,

Another random post...for all you people in recruitment (and perhaps those not)...what would you interpret the following question to mean:

Given the large amount of information available to you, please describe in detail how you decided upon your chosen business/functional area

(And any example answers would be helpful. Wink)

Cheers,

That the person who compiled the questions is a bit of an idiot?

FFS what is a "large amount of information available to you?" Rolling Eyes

If they mean "why did you decide to do what you do" (which I think is likely) then why can't they just ask that? Confused

I think I wouldn't exactly be eager to work for somone who put such a poorly-worded question on an application form, apart from anything else it's generally more of an interview-stage question than an initial-application one.........

Mmm... I'm not into recruitment but...

I would examine my baseline priorities then develop a cost versus means tested example in order to develop an effecacious business paradigm.

Chuck in "thinking outside the box," "managing expections," "Dynamic project roles," "silo type project work" (still don't know what that means) and "success criteria."

I have no idea what those things are, but my manager said them all at a recent meeting and he gets paid more than me so it must mean something.

As I see it, they're asking about your own personal / career history, then?? Something you should be able to elaborate on...

....but I agree it's a badly worded question Thumbs Down

The application is not for me, so I don't want to jump into any of my personal, uneducated guesses...but my first impression is that it means: "Given that the world is so big, why the hell have you chosen this job in particular?"

I did a search for this question in Google, and the first hit is a company that will help you complete application questions for a fee...and this question was in it!

What a stupid question.

Is there a psychometric test attached to the back of this application form?

I've seen "Why have you chosen to apply for this job?" a number of times, which is a similar thing.
I'd suggest taking the personal specification list, and using that as a structure for your answer quoting an example of how you fit the specification and therefore this line of work is just *so* perfect for you.

what motivates you, i hate that one all this american styled phchoanylistic approach makes me want to heave,

i applied for the prison service and made it through all the tests etc and at the last minute when they told me where i was going to be posted i decided i couldnt be bothered, at the end of the day most of us want the job because it pays well, and any potential employer knows dam well that thats the main motivation along with keeping a roof over your head etc

Personally, my criteria usually revolve around:

"Because you're offering more than anyone else for a job that sounds vaguely interesting at this point in my life ... so I'll take this one for now, and when it bores me, I'll do something else."
