Check out the Times Online and the Telegraph online.
Both have extensive online archives, though you do have to pay for historical articles (can't remember how old..)
I bought a package of 50 articles when I was completing my dissertation, it didn't cost very much in relation to going to London to look at archives and photocopying/having microfish printed. If I could remember my log-in details I'd offer you the 8 or so articles I have left over... but I can't ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

Thanks for the reply, will have a look. I normally use Guardian but it would be more helpful for my essay to find actual front pages from the time rather then reports.
Will keep looking though

The search functions are pretty flexible.
I was searching for specific dates (dates of premieres) and a specific person - Shostakovich.
You can just search for a specific period that will give you a range of pages available.
Otherwise book a day to go to the London newspaper archives (there's plenty of parking there and it's easy enough to find), give them a call first and details exactly what you are after and they'll have those items ready for you when you get there. I found the staff very helpful ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!
