xbox 360 storage alternatives?

i currently only have the standard core system 360, however instead of forking out for an xbox badged hd, can i get one that will fit into the usb slot..like an external usb hd.

Alternatively could i just plug in my USB and save information onto that?

I use a USB stick to transfer photo's etc. to my xbox

try one and see if you can save your savegames to it

Also do i have to have the HD to play live? ive heard updates are needed every so often and these require space
