I was just wondering today, how hot does an exhaust roughly get?
When its raining, and im at a standstill (or just parked up with engine off), the rain hits my exhaust and evaporates immediatley.....and if you touch it, it bloody hurts (not intentional )
So, does the 'outer skin' get a lot hotter than the inner part (mines got a tube that extends from the downpipe and goes right into the 'core' of the exhaust where all the baffles are).....or does the inner parts get a lot hotter than the outer parts? |

The inside of an exhaust gets far hotter than the outside. The double skin is there to reduce the temperature of the outside, to look more impressive (bigger pipes, bigger engine). Combustion exhaust gas temperatures can be in excess of 1000 degrees C, but are typically about 800 degrees C. Heat is dissipated as it goes back through the exhaust pipes, but not by all that much. The cans will usually be hot enough to burn you too, but should be at a lower temperature than the rest of it. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Downpipes as stinkwheel rightly said can get hot as 700 degrees. Exhaust gases are about 500-800 degrees celsius.
Depending on the material of your pipe and can, each material has different heat capacities and heat flow rates. I like carbon fibre cans because they insulate their heat well. Touch a carbon can after use and it won't be as hot as a stainless steel one. ____________________ The Tot 2007 Yamaha R1 4C8 2002 Yamaha FZS1000 Fazer &

Well, i think mines made out of monkey metal and chrome plated
I didn't realise exhausts could get that hot though ...it has suprised me actually, i was expecting people to say 200/300 at the most
Anyway, thanks guys....was a really pointless question but it had been annoying me for weeks trying to find out |

How hot do brake discs get when they've had a pounding? I remember when I used my rear brake too much once the fluid boiled and I lost all power. I hopped off, wondering why and (yes, stupidly) touched the disc with my finger. It sizzled, smelt of pork and I've got no fingerprint on the end of my index finger.
I'm assuming normal brake discs aren't just mild steel like exhaust headers, and also that the F1 cars (carbon discs?) brakes glow red hot when they're used. |

nice and warm ideal for winter , stick your hands on them for a second! (no more or they'll cook) when you get off for instant warmth though the clutch cover is much safer , and its safer with the back of your hands with your gloves on. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. It's funny cause my standard exhaust on my Bandit got really hot to the touch however my Carbon Can Co exhaust only ever gets warm. A nice warm for the winter actually can rest my hands on it and warm it up. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. G, that disappointed me, you know how i like hitting the killswitch on my bikes . Could that be because of the pressure waves involved in a backfire damaging the epoxy bonds that hold the fibre weaves together? I assume you managed to blow a nice chunk out of your exhaust when doing it? ____________________ The Tot 2007 Yamaha R1 4C8 2002 Yamaha FZS1000 Fazer &

I don't mean to invade someone else's thread, but has anyone ever lagged their downpipes?
https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=NIM11151
The downpipes on my Cat don't seem to be enjoying winter (if you can call it that ) riding as much as I am, I'm thinking this would protect them to some degree but don't know how hot things would get??????? |
