I've decided that the zxr400 is just too small for me, I've heard it being described as very good for short riders etc and I am 6 foot something. When I sit on my dad's ZX9R it feels much more comfortable, so I think I'm going to have to change it for something a bit more my size.

Engine size is going to have to be similar, although I've no problems with going higher if it can be insured for a similar/lower price.

I'm thinking a trail bike, like Honda XR400 or Suzuki DRZ400? Or a supermoto version of the same? Would be nice to have the ability to go around the fields a bit. How much different are they on the road to a sportsbike, handling wise?

Any suggestions?

you should get a magic carpet ride compared to a sportsbike, but with exaggerated dive under braking. It will also want to wheelie all the time (even the smaller capacity singles). I much prefer the ride of an enduro type bike to a sports type bike, but it's a personal preference.

The only answer is to grab yourself a test ride on one and see if you like it. Supermotos are an absolute hoot.

Good Laughing

I think I will try to get a test ride of one. Also gonna check out insurance.

Does anyone know if I change my ZXR policy to one for a bike with lower insurance (such as an xr250 or something) will they give me a partial refund so I'm not paying zxr prices each month for a lower bike (I pay by direct debit each month) ?

Don't know. My insurance on the SV650 was the same (to the penny) as my DR350. Lets face it, a dirtbike is far more likely to get nicked than a sports/nekkid.

Engine size isn't as relevant as you would imagine in this situation.

There is no way that a 400cc enduro/trailie will make as much power as a ZXR400.

That said, they are a lot more nickable.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

TDM 850?

Big, squashy, fun, scarey when you want it to be, similar power to the zxr.

What kind of riding do you do? If you do much motorway anything under a 600 trial bike might be hard work. Until i passed my test i always had trial bikes but when i started going to work and back, 35 mile round trip i soon realised what i needed was something more suited to the job. if your bike is more a fun thing / short trip then a big single would be perfect if thats what you want.

Just checked what they are on biketrader, looks a little out of my league right now, looking to pick up a cb500, gs500 or er-5 for as close to a grand.

Cheers though.

I find that its not the hight of the seat if your tall its the riding possition, no point getting a traily and then finding out the pegs are close so your cramped,
huge ground clearence means nothing,
I have a zzr 1200 but it could with lower pegs from a buell xbs or something. like johnny gsxr Smile
