You can put a bit of preload on it by screwing the rings/adjuster down a couple of threads (if it's got them on the 600) but to be honest if it's still on the original shocker and getting soggy then it's time for a change. The OE ones are infamous for being crap and not lasting to start with.

On the early 600's at least (unsure of 2000+) the rear preload is set by turning a stepped adjuster into one of 5 or 6 pre set heights which are numbered. If it's already on it's highest setting then you're stuffed really. After 20k they're shagged anyway so best off getting a second hand early bandit 1200 shock (bit firmer - will fit) in good nick or just getting a replacement from Hagon etc for a few hundred smackers.

Or just ride it anyway, just like Tigger "Boing, boing, boing"

Depending on how much 'harder' you want to make the spring you may need to replace it with a stiffer version. Adding more and more preload won't actually make the spring any stiffer, it mearly affects the static sag.

Is the adjustment on the spring itself?

It's on top of the spring, the collar that holds it on at the top moves and compresses the spring hence being called preload. As CB says technically it shouldn't make that much difference as it's a straight wound spring therefore should have the same compression rate all the way down but in practice it does make it stiffer/harder. Looking down on it turning it clockwise moves it down. But as we've said it will be knackered anyway after 5 years and ideally needs replacement, it's too much of a budget shock on the Bandit to be worth an overhaul.
