Watching BBC news this morning. We create over 27 million tones of waste a year in the UK where as Germany only manage 10 million and Spain 17 million.

They were saying that you might soon have to pay to get rid of your non recyclable waste which I think is a bloody good idea.

Do your bit recycle!

We already do pay to get rid of rubbish - what else do I get for my £1000 a year council tax?

If they want it to happen then the obvious way would be to make it easier.

Instead they will just fine you for not recycling.

Seriously, food tins needing to be washed. If it needs to be done then it can be done easily (and probably with far less use of water) centrally once collected.

All the best

We should recycle of course, but we ought to be incentivised...

In Sweden for example every beer and pop can is returnable (you pay a little extra when you buy) - All the supermarkets have a hole in the wall where you plop them in, along with bottles etc, and you get a money off voucher... Helps reduce litter too.

where we live they give you a green bin where you can put the recyclable items into and its collected by the council.

regardless of what you pay or your views, when it is made this easy, not recycling is unacceptable, everyone should do there bit,

I tend to work on the basis that helping to try and avoid turning the planet into a giant landfill is incentive enough...

Flytipping will increase.

I'm fucked if I'm gonna do all the work so some company can get all the profit.

Recycling my bollocks. Power plants pay govt for waste which can be used as fuel. ( I don't have a shred of evidence to back this up).

IMO flytipping should get a mandatory custodial sentence. I've seen some near me, in nice areas, and I could strangle any twat that does this.

<pedant mode>It's "their"</pedant mode off>
Add money to everything possible, and give it back when you hand it in/recycle...

I must admit the way things are now I just stick everything in the bin coz I am a lazy git. We have a bin for garden waste now, so that's good, but not enough...

The council get fined for dumping at the land filled sites which are estimated to be full up in the next decade so drastic action needs to be taken.

Quite right - the council needs to stop spending all their money paying huge salaries to Ethnic Lesbian Socialist Single Mother Support Workers, and concentrate on real services.

I pay £1400 council tax a year, and for that, I sort/wash my own rubbish, and only have collections every other week. If they don't like how we've sorted the rubbish, they just leave it all behind, and we end up throwing it in the normal bin to get it out of the way.

Well the population of Spain is at about 40 million whereas the UK is at around 60 million. So if you calculate it, if spain had another 20 million people then they would be producing about 25.5 million tonnes. So that's about the same as the UK then.

Germany on the other hand has a population of about 80 million and yet produce only about 10 million tonnes. Wow. I say we need to learn how the Germans sort their waste out and try to do the same here.

I have seen "Germans sort their waste out". It is not a video I would recommend freely.

I have seen a similar video whilst at a friends house. He said he "found it on the street". Laughing

It is strange experience, it is funny yet disgusting at the same time.

What kind of waste are you 2 talking about Shocked

Sick Sick Sick

We recycle glass bottles every night almost and paper/cardboard every 2 weeks. But if it's slightly wet they leave it outside our house. Evil or Very Mad

Nothing for cans though. Anywhere here and we live in a "posh" place as friends seem to call it.

So how many seperate green bins do you need for all the sorted out goods for recycling? Or do you just dump them all in one box so someone can sort it out later, in which case there is a perfectly good wheelie bin for the same purpose.

Filled up because they have agreed not to create any new ones. Which is creating a problem and then using the problem they have knowingly created as an excuse.

Want people to recycle? Then change the wheelie bins. Several seperate compartments, so they can be emptied into seperate sections of a bin lorry in one go. Make the splitting of items limited and easy (who gives a damn if steel and aluminium drinks cans are put in the same bin, it is a doddle using a magnet to seperate them in bulk). Take food tins in a dirty state, as it would be quick (and almost certainly far more water efficient) to clean them centrally if required.

All the best

In Germany, you're allowed to leave any unnecessary packaging in the shop; supermarkets often have huge bins after the tills. For example, if you buy a box of cereals, you leave the cardboard box behind.

Where I live, it's quite easy, as we get our recyclables collected from the bin. We've got two industrial sized ones, a normal one and a recycling one, which are emptied three times a week ( Shhh! don't tell anyone), and we don't need to sort the recycling.

There's one of these being built in California, I remember a post about it a couple of months back. Judging by the article, it looked extremely promising, no pollution made by it. Can't find the post though. Confused

I like the German system of kitchen bins that have separate compartments or there are three different coloured bins.

We have a recycling box, into which go glass bottles/jars, tin cans and paper. It's easy enough at the beginning of the week to put three plastic bags into the box to separate it for the three different types of item. When it's collected they are put into different compartments in the lorry. Thumbs Up

If I had to make a special trip to the tip to recycle then, as much as I believe it's essential, I probably wouldn't bother.

One of my clients burns what they call "odd fuels" in their power stations. This can be anything from chicken poo from poultry farms to pirate DVDs and cocaine confiscated by customs. They get paid by the government for disposing of some of this stuff. Some of it they have to pay for. Depends what it is, what its calorific value is and how many other companies would happily dispose of it.

(this is not a UK client by the way - not sure what the policy is over here)

I don't get this "In a decade the UK landfills will be full" business. There is a plenty of UK land available for landfill. There are plenty of run down brown field areas which could be replaced by Landfill, f*** the NIMBY's. Thumbs Up

the main problem is people use too much packaged food

I use one bin bag a week, if that.

There are houses in my street that use about 15, and they dont have 15 occupants.

Landfill also causes greenhouse gases...(Methane and carbon dioxide)

We really ought to recycle as much as possible.

Lots of new housing estates are built on land fill sites.
