long story short:

1. bike ran out of fuel, the previous owner had the normal/reserve lines mixed up so it ran out in reserve.

2. Bike hasnt run right since. I've replaced fuel filters (in and out tank), drained the tank of water (loads in it) and frained the carbs of water... bike runs better.

3. Bike runs for about 20 miles or so then starts to bog down and eventually cut out, sounds like it's missing.

3a. Only way to get it started again is to turn the tap to the off position, give it full throttle and it'll just tick over abou 1k then gradually rise and clear itself and run fine but after 1 minute of turning fuel tap back on the process starts over again.

3b. It'll clear itself and run/start fine if left for several hours.

Any ideas? still some water in teh carbs or water got back into the tank, it has been torential rain recently.. plugs, leads, etc all changed, too..

Sounds like so many things could be wrong.

First, mixing up the main/reserve lines - are you sure?? Normally, all that stuff is done internally to the fuel tap. There's not a seperate tube for each. Odd bikes with two taps notwithstanding

Second, if it had water in it, then the water is coming from somewhere, and, in all likelyhood, it's full of water again. That would explain some symptoms.

Thirdly, may be worth checking the tank air breather. Sometimes a seperate tube, more often built into the fuel cap. That would also explain some symptoms.

Finally, whn you say turn the tap to "off", do you really mean you put it on "prime", which might indicate a problem with the fuel tap vacuum line/diaphragm. Some taps are on-res-prime, not on-res-off.

Possible combination of 2. and 3 is that the water drain for the fuel cap recess is blocked, so the recess is filling with water, which blocks the breather in the fuel cap and eventually starts passing water through into the tank itself. So, check the drain would be my first thought. Pour water over the filler cap, you should see it myteriously pouring out of a tube somewhere else at the bottom of the bike. if it jsut creates a pool, something's wrong.

finpos.

I presume that you have checked the obvious thing that the tap is in the right position, or it hasn't been put back together with the indicator in the wrong position.

It sounds like your just mistakingly turning the fuel tap the wrong way, which could be that the marker has been turned to the wrong place if it's been meddled with before.

it has seperate lines for reserve and normal pickup, two filters, one short and one on a long pipe, both of which go direvtly to the tap (on-off-res).. nah the feul tap marker is on correctly as i dosconnected the "out" pipe that goes to the pump to make sure fuel was passing through ok.

i'll check the tank breather if that's ok i'' drain the tnak again see if it's full of water (again)..

it's weird though as it runs fine for so many miles if it's been left. i use it to commute and it's always fine to and from work.

ty for the help.

Open the filler cap next time it happens, if the breather is blocked it will hiss and should start again once you close the cap.
