What do you all reckon?
Shattered rings/stuffed piston/power valve welded by the fragments and a well scored barrel. Sad
Where do I look for a big bore kit and how much can I expect to pay?
How much for a new standard barrel or should I buy second hand?
Would it be more ecconomical to just buy a new complete engine?
The head and barrel had very little sign of carbon build up, is this normal for 12000 miles?

any response would be helpful, cheers.

Hi

Think Malossi do a big bore kit for the NSR125RK.

Easiest fix is to get the barrel replated and put a new piston in. Several companies do replated barrels (but most of those that advertise just send them elsewhere, such as a well known tuning company). Try Langcourt Engineering down near Bath or there is a place in Wolvo :- www.prox.co.uk

I doubt the little end bearing would cause the engine to seize, unless you ran it for ages sounding awfu. However, the same lack of lubricant that could wreck the little end could equally wreck the piston rings

Buying a complete 2nd hand engine would cost far more than getting the barrel replated, and the 2nd hand engine may not be in much better condition than your current one.

All the best

Stan stephens do replating which is better than resleeving (according to stan) for about the same price. https://www.stanstephens.com/
Looks like my bore isnt too bad, and can be polished out according to the bike shop bloke. Still dont know what caused it to get scratched???!!

Hi

As far as I have heard, Stan Stephens do not do replating, they just send the barrels elsewhere

Lots of things can cause damage to the bore. Broken rings, broken piston circlips, rubbish getting into engine from running without an air filter, remains of reed valve if they fail, etc

All the best

Phoned Stan Stevens today-one stroppy bitch of a receptionist. Not very helpful, just intrested in top dollars. Wanted 198 squid for replacement cylinder and all the bits except the powervalve guts. Honda dealer - 287 all inclusive.
What to do?????
Keith, would it cause too much problem having the powervalve flaps welded to the barrel or would it mean a whole new unit?
Do P.J. eng repair my barrel or do they send a recon unit?
what do you reckon?

Did see that one off the fibre reed valve petals had a small chip in about 1mm square, but would this cause continuous damage, would the piece of rubbish stay in the crank case???
Thanks

Hi

Having the power valve stuck in place would not be a good idea. I think Langcourt will replate the barrel you send them. Never dealt with them, but they do have a good reputation. I know they can do some repairs to barrels (such as welding up cracks), but I dont know if they could do the work to remove the power valve

Fibre reeds should not cause too much damage (I think it was the RD125LC, amoung others, that used steel reeds, and they could cause a mess). I would not expect lots of scores from a small piece of reed valve.

All the best
