Best thing for removing rust.

Quite deep set rust from some downpipes. I need to get it off so i can spray the downpipes with some black heatproof paint. But i want to make sure that the rust doesnt just eat away at the metal underneath once i've painted. So does anyone have any good tips/advice?

i used a power drill with a wire brush attachment on the downpipes of my YZF and they came up a treat Thumbs Up

I dont have any of this fancy power tool malarky, its just plain elbow grease and sweat. Is there kits you can buy just to fit into and ordinary drill? Or is that what your on about?

If yor scared of lektricksity just use a wire brush, you will get the same results but it will take a tad longer. Wink

Go to halfords and buy some rust removal gel. You paint it on and leave it for half an hour, and then wipe it off and most of the rust comes with it. If you're downpipes are rusty all the way through it may leave holes in them though...

There is rust conversion stuff that you paint on and it converts rust to a form of iron that is non corrosive. Or just paint the pipes, rust requires oxygen to oxidise the steel, you do a decent job of painting it and you'll have no problem.

Take a look here and do a search for rust, they sell some good stuff

sounds like jenolite, only good for flaky stuff and surrounding holes etc. need a good abrasive to get the deep pit filled bits on downpipes Thumbs Up

What happens if it does go through the rust, ill try that jelolite stuff and try that. Then ill try the wire brush thing. But if i do go though then what. Will it fail its MOT?

If it goes all the way through your exhaust will start blowing and it will fail the MOT. Equally, this means it was going to start blowing all by itself in a very short time anyway.

If you use a drill-mounted wire brush. Wear a boiler suit, goggles and gloves. They have a tendancy to shed bits of wire at high speed. Last exhaust I did with one fired several bits of wire into my shins which is unpleasant at best.
