I'm at a total loss with work,

Im 19, left school with good grades and wnayed to be a mechanic, prefabably with bikes.

I got onto a car mechanics trial thing but didnt take the job as it was a shit garage and the people working there were all arrogant twats. Ive never heard back from any bike garages or training providers so I've pretty much decided they're not gonna get back to me.

I did work in sales in the bike trade but it's just not for me, trying to upsell things and deal with customers answering phones etc just isnt my thing, I enjoy work thats more hands on, anyone got any ideas what I could do?

All I've done for 3 years is dead boring jobs and I'm sick to death of it!

Thats just the way this country is at the moment. Bugger all career oppertunities.
I think the government should force companies to take on apprentices/trainees, because they're just not interested otherwise.

I've just relocated to Norfolk, from Sussex, and there are absolutely no jobs, whatsoever (unless you wanna work 12hrs a week Rolling Eyes )

Visit your local job centre, if you can stand to sit around for 17hrs and talk to numerous russian/lithuanian people, you might find out where/who is hiring junior mechs and taking on apprentices.

I was untill recently in the same situation, same age 19/20. Like weedy say thee really is no job opportunities in Norfolk.

I have just started an advanced apprenticeship with National Grid (in September) although it isnt bike mechanics its the hands on work ive always wanted. I get about the country training in various places and get 1st class training, so far i really do like it.

The apprenticeship is 3 years with oppertunities to carry on and a HND and degree course at the end of it with it all paid for.

Could be worth a look if your after an apprenticeship. If not check out a company called ECITB they do alot of apprenticeships and can be found on google. Try writing to various campies or bike dealers asking if they want to take on an aprrentice, brittish gas, brittish energy etc.

I also found my local connexions website had alot of opportunities advertised up for young people

I noticed a couple of you mentioned lack of oppertunities in Norfolk. Just to let you know in the EDP theres ads for trainee quantity surveyors and apprenticeship oil & gas technicians - both good jobs.

Hey I'm a healthcare too, why are you quitting?

I was at Halfords for three years, learnt loads with electrics on cars and did a motorcycle maintenance course at merton college for 6months, was a bit of a mission but I really enjoyed myself there, plus it was good studying with adults and not kiddies wasting time. Now I'm a healthcare assistant in a hospital, might do nursing can't really decide, just want to get something behind me so I can earn even half what my boyfriend does!

well what an intresting thread!

Ive been self employed for 3 years now and due to family issues im going back to uni in september to study multimedia tech. Its gonna be a long, poor 3 years but i get a Bsc, a year in industry and a placement job at the end if i desire. Plus i get to mess about on photoshop all day! Very Happy

I can also, provided im good enough go on to do a PHD where i would be paid a wage, anddddddd not have to pay any tax because i will still be a student, thus i will already be able to pay off the student debt!

Im not saying uni is for everyone but from a door opening point of view it can totally change some peoples lives

If you want a career, you got to be prepared to move around the country to find your opportunities!

I was happy that I came to a university in the Midlands as there are quite a few jobs around, however if I want to get into my desired career, I have to be prepared to move to the London area or South East England. It's just the way it is in this country.

I know people complain about student debt and the time uni takes, but since i got my degree I've been offered every job I've ever sent a CV in for.

It's always been more me interviewing them than the other way round. I'm now on the boarder of Norfolk and Suffolk. There arn't that many jobs about but it gives qualified people one hell of an advantage as there are nowhere near as many people with the right skills here compared to London way. Take that with the cost of living round here and I don't know why more people come over here!

Work in IT.

Spent a while as a web developer, then moved on and became an Oracle DBA, then I moved to where i am now where I'm in charge of network security, and at the end of March I leave here and start a new job where I'm in charge of rolling out a new document management system and get to work on redeveloping business processes for different departments at my local council.

I never said my job was exciting!
