Pit bike on the road?

Been looking at getting one of those 125 pit bikes to put on the road, not to use all the time, just for a bit frisk!

Have any of you got one on the road? what are they like as road bikes (only ever riden a mates on a dirt track)

And would it be cheaper to get one of the road ready ones that just need registering or get an off road one and stick lights and stuff on then register it? Do off road ones come with the paperwork to get it on the road or is it an arse to get?

Just after some cheap winter fun really!

get one ready for teh road, there was a second hand 2006 model on ebay the other day for 300 quid, not bad for a new bike with three years MOT, i wouldnt want to ride one myself, zero road presence and hassle from the coppers, but they do look a hoot

Yeah seen road legal thumpstars for £800.

The hastle you'd have road regging it would be a pain in the arse. I'm sure it'd have to go through various test like SVA or equivalent.

A lot of hastle for very little gain I'm afraid.

I've seen them for around £400 brand new, ready for the road but need registering (£38 + £15 for a years tax), no sva needed or anything, obviously its not a proper x-sport or thumpstar but I'm not bothered, it will only get a couple of months use then I'll be on to something else!

Next thing is the insurance, had 2 quotes, £160 TPO and another of £200 but they said once I give them a reg no or chassis no they can do me a deal and get it to about £140 - £150

Thats from Rampdale and MCE, I'm struggling to find places that will insure them!

i was gunna get 1!!! there CRAP with a capital C!!!
shinery 125cc and went up and down the roads on it an around town and it was naff it pulled like a sack of spuds and everything rattled! it was only 1 month old!!

put a pit in a feild and its a whole new ball game!! great fun i used to have a x-sport for up the feilds and loved it! that did about 65 with diffo gearing! and it pulled really well considering the size of it!

i would sugest if ur gunna get 1. dont get 1! GET 2! a proper x-sport or thump and swap all the parts over to the frame of the sinery, only because everything goes wrong on them shinery ones!! EVERYTHING! i ad a m8 in yeovil who had 1 and every week he would com in to colage saying something blew up or melted! the best 1 was when u sat on it and burnt ya ARSE on the exhaust because it melted throught the fairing lol! and that exhaust gets mighty HOT! he only had it for about a month and sold it as spares on ebay

if ya gunna get 1 get a really good 1! word of warning! all the best!

I agree with that, the cheaper x-sport/thumpstar ripoffs will break very very quickly.

Considered a full sized trail bike?
If you don't mind a tatty one, can get them for a pretty reasonable price.

Several folks round here have them... altho some not exactly road-legal, and the majority display no road sense whatsoever. If you DO buy one, please ride it with some sense and don't perch on the left of the backwheel of someone on a bigger bike... where you can't see the indicators. You WILL come off worst.

I dont fancy a full size one and was only thinking about getting a cheap copy because the proper ones are out of my "bit of fun" budget! I have a VFR 400 for proper riding, if the cheap ones will be falling to bits every 2 minutes I think I'll just give it a miss altogether unless one comes up cheap!

I was always being told the mini moto copies were crap and always fell apart but I've had 2 and not had a problem so thought it would be the same with these!

I've got a "copied" 110 off road pitbike, cost me £450 delivered but that was like at least 18month ago! While it isn't the best of bikes, it aint too bad and it's taken one hell of a beating, the amount of times it's been crashed/flipped etc is unreal


Great fun off road but wouldn't feel safe at all with it on road.

I prefer it over bigger off road bikes as it's small and kinda light, where I live there aint many big open fields, but lots of woods/small tracks/hills and fences (you can just throw it over any in your way! )

About a year ago me and my mates got plastered one night when it was snowing, and took it out on the road*, was soooo much fun



*this may make us sound like wreckless mindless chavs, but we're not - we live in the complete middle of nowhere

I would have one for off road but the motox track near me has been closed except for race days where as before when it was not in use you could go on for £5 for the whole day (usualy only a few people there so it was all good fun!)

So I was thinking of a road legal one, with off road tyres (if they are road legal??) and nip off road now and again, would also be fun on the industrial estate where I work, especially with the snow coming soon!

The thing is, 110 xsport or 125 shineray copy and who to get insured with? (found 2 places so far that will insure the copys but havent found anywhere for the xsports yet)

H&R insurance can do it! good price aswell!!!

im 23 and they quoted me £112 for a year! they would only do 3rd party because the bike aint worth it because its soooo cheep!!!
