The ignition lock on my bike has frozen. Laughing Rolling Eyes

So it looks like I've got the day off until it thaws, not that I can do much with it as I can't go anywhere.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

I've tried windscreen defroster, WD-40 and 3 in 1 oil.
I also tried heating the key on the oven.
I managed to get the key most of they way in, but it's sticking out a few millimetres, just enough to stop it turning! Rolling Eyes

I gave up after two hours when I lost the feeling in my fingers, now I just pop outside every 1/2 to see if it's unfrozen.

I do actually want to be at work today as there is some very useful training going on.

Happened too me last night as I was coming home, unfortunately that meant my key was frozen in the ignition.

I put the bike in the garage, left it over night, and the key slid straight out this morning.

Make a cup of hot sweet tea.

Pour some over the ignition.

Drink the rest.

I also tried my zx636 on the off chance that might work; it's even worse than the beemer.

Can anybody confirm sickpup's suggestion? No offence sickpup, but pouring sweet tea into my lock doesn't seem like a great idea.

A slight ground frost and the country grinds to a stop. Wait for the bad weather to start this is nothing yet. Wink Mr. Green

What you want is one of them there remote start bikes.

I wonder how long it'll be before you start to see bikes coming with a keyless ignition. That be pretty funky. Could bury all the wiring under the tank then and and not have to worry about the thing getting hotwired so easily.

'Hop on and press start' - Great!

This is where Kickstart pulls out an archive of info on keylesss start bikes! Laughing

Have used warm water to thaw an ignition barrel before now - last ditch attempt after heating the key and all that - but it worked Thumbs Up

Put a bit of plastic or card over it next time - before it freezes.
Its the damp getting in from dew which causes the problem when it freezes.

Surprised I've never had this problem!

Do you keep your bikes outside? Because this has never happened to my bike and its kept in an unheated garage.

I'm surprised at you Danny, did common sense not kick in to pour warm water over it? Razz

Used to have that problem most mornings last year, wait until you get to the petrol station on reserve and the tank lock is frozen!

The padlock I chain my bike up with was frozen when I got home at 10 last night. Shocked

I just left it unchained, no way was I faffing with deicer after riding through freezing fog!!! Laughing Hand

This could well happen to my bike, even though it's under a cover. I was thinking of putting an old blanket or summit between bike and cover? My dad used to use one on the car windscreen, always stopped it freezing. Whaddyas think - a good idea? Question

A simple cover should be enough to stop the lock freezing.

What you need to stop, is the moisture in the air settling on the lock mechanism and then freezing, that's the problem.

But then again, my ER5 did have a really dodgy ignition, could turn it on with a screw drivers. But the backfire on a cold morning certainly did wake the neighbours! Laughing

Erm....common sense kicked in and I realised that if I pour water into it, the problem will be much worse tomorrow morning. Razz

The Harley Street rod is a keyless bike, you carry a fob and when you get close to the bike the imobiliser is turned off. All you do is press a button, get on and ride off into the sunset.....er...ok in this country you ride off into the fog.

Indeed it can be reheated, but the whole problem in the first place was caused by the difficulty in heating water that is inside my ignition lock Razz

Use a kettle to heat water, pour said water over ignition, 10 seconds later you can ride away!

Could this be why Sickpup said hot sweet tea what with it having a much lower freezing point than water?
