Guitar and finger tips

I thought on the 24th why not try learn how to play? , and got myself a steel stringed
acoustic guitar , I've been able to form and switch about 5 chords , thing is the fingers
on my left hand hurt almost exactly last 2 weeks previously when they were semi crushed
and the feeling in my index finger feels really iffy.

My question is this , for all you players out there is there some sort of glove and or finger
protector ? , I'm getting fairly into it , having spent a few hours this morning having a bit of
a go.

But the fact it makes my finger tips feel horrible is putting me off , this combined with
cold weather riding makes my finger tips feel really bad.

you big girl lol, nah you will form calluses after a while, my party trick is to set my fingers on fire as they are so hard now


to be honest, elecrtic guitar is much easier to learn to play on, because its easier on the fingersand the neck is much thinner, you can pick up a cheap strat copy off ebay for less than 50 quid

Nothing better than some nice steel strings to take the tips of your fingers off! Your fingertips will become calloused and hard, soon you will feel nothing when you play (unless, of course, you have a very loud drunken guitar vs piano session like Jon and I did on Saturday night causing bruised fingers and a bad hangover).

the more you play the harder your finger tips become
gloves & things are useless as the take any feeling out of your playing
and cause you to "fluff" the notes and make it harder to play
just keep at it every day and within a month you'll be fine

if you move to an eletric guitar there normally easier on the fingers
I play both but learn tunes on the acc then play them on the electric

It only takes about 2 weeks to get used to it. You won't get full on calluses in that time but your tips will go slightly tough and shiney, and the soreness wears off.

As said above, just keep playing through the pain.

If you stop now, they'll never go hard. You'll get there in the end, and be sure to upload us some mp3's

yeah been there done that and it was way too far, couldn't play for a week afterwards

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I remember wrapping band-aids around the tips of my fingers when I was learning how to play.

They didn't help my fingers feel any better, and they screwed up my playing even more. But at the time thought it was a brilliant idea.

Take it easy. If your fingers are really painful then go a few days without playing to let them heal a bit.

I'v decided to learn guitar twice over the past year, both times I've 'played' long enough for my fingers to toughen up then got bored and found something else to do, my short attention span sucks.

I used to smear a bit of glue (pritt stick or something) over my finger tips, waited for it to set, then played away...protects your fingertips from the worst of the pain, they'll still go hard and you can peel the hardened glue off afterwards!

Just don't use superglue!

used to put superglue on mine made them hard fairly quick... dunno if it was safe though
