Was getting a bit tired of not been able to pick up girlfiends or arrive anywhere without helmet hair so have bought my first car. Ive also got a question for Keith if you read this mate.

Am pretty chuffed at the moment with it. Its a '97 Rover 220 Mk3 2.0 Diesel Turbo engine kicking out only 95Bhp but it looks the part.

Anyway Keith my mechanically experienced friend, im gonna plumb an Intercooler onto the engine. Y'know one of the high performance ones to be mounted behind front bumper. Thing is, when thatsplumbed in, will any changes need to be made to the fuel pump to make optimum performance with the massively lower charge temperatures??
I haven't looked properly yet but im pretty sure the fuel pump is controlled by the ECU. I know there is a lot of aftermarket chips to fit which gain an extra 25% more power or something but apart from fitting one of those will it need any other mods?

Cheers for any help buddy

Hi

I know little about diesels, but a turbo engine does benefit from an intercooler. This is plumbed in between the turbo and the "throttle". However, a diesel engine does not have a throttle (it just works by varying the amount of diesel fuel that is pumped into the engine).

You probably would need to somehow adjust the fueling to take account of the intercooler. However, diesel pumps are normally pretty much mechanical, with the amount of fuel mainly being based on engine speed.

Sorry I cannot be more help, but I dont know much about diesels (dont really like to drive them either)

The "chips" for diesels just work by richening the mixture. Look out for the diesel cars dumping even more smoke out of the back than usual!

All the best

Keith

Hi m8, id give superchips uk a ring, as they do alot of tuning work on deisels, and yes a chip will give you a good hp boost, like 20-25bhp and a load more torque usually at lower revs than std. There are a few specialists that advertise in the back of the Deisel car magazine, and they should know a thing or two about intercooler conversions. If your car is a 220D then you should be able to fit the intercooler from the SDI to make things simple, but as you say to take advantage of it then the fueling needs tweaking as well.
