Not thunder birds or anything , but my general fears are gettting stuck say middle of spain with a broken down bike.

Is there sort of an insurance policy (other than a very understanding dad with a van) that will come and bring you home? ,

I'm of course going to minimise risk ie service bring some spares , list of nearby bike shops but the unexpected may occur.

and what am I looking to pay ? , since I can probably boil it down to insurance vs super service before hand,

Any thoughts?

International Breakdown Smile - most breakdown firms offer european cover at an extra cost, International Breakdown are my favourite for the UK, but not used them abroad.

A months cover with the AA last year cost me over a hundred quid - It don't come cheap!

Carol nash do free european breakdown, and also their european cover is for up to 90days (quite a few companies only cover for up to 30 or 60 days).

Are you with the AA in the UK Nath? I am and to add the month's European cover it was an additional 40 quid, rather than over 100! Wink

If going directly through a breakdown firm (rather than an insurers), they tend to add a decent loading if your bike is over 10 years old Wink

I went through the AA for European cover. It cost me about £100 for a week as I'm not a member of the AA and my bike is 16 years old.

Plus they decided to load on a little bit more as I was going through some "class two" countries.

But it was a nice peace of mind.

I know this is a bit late now, but next time go through your insurance and even use it as part of your criteria at renewal time.

On a 1991 bike for the last three years my Euro breakdown costs have been £0 (carol nash), £30 (Roadsure) and £30 (can't remember) for 12 months cover UK & EU.

Thanks I'll bear that in mind as my insurance is up for renewal in February.

Just read, list of bike shops, wtf?! You're going to take a list of bike shops for the whole of spain, get real Razz

If you need a bike shop just ask where the nearest one is, that's why you take a cheap phrasebook.

Ebike European breakdown recovery £50 a year.

Check the small print though, to check if you can get the bike recovered after an accident only if you make an insurance claim. My Ducati is covered by Ducati Assurance for the first two years and they only recover an accident damaged bike (even if the accident was caused by a third party who then fled the scene) if you claim against your insurance, so a small lift to a local garage can turn out to cost a few hundred pounds due to lost NCBs.

Another thing to check with any recovery policy, is that you get repatriation (recovered to the UK) rather than just recovery to a local dealers - a lot of the cheaper options only offer the local dealer option.

Never even heard of euro breakdown affecting your NCB, only a few select UK ones *might* try to claim off it if towing you back from an accident.

The fact that you're getting it cheaper through the insurance company is irrelvant really, they usually use a third party such as the Rac or Green Flag. I'm fairly sure Carol Nash don't take off your NCB either.
