Hey,
I'm in the running to get a job as a Trainee software developer. The job is 40miles each way, equating to a possible 50minute run everyday, each way. The journeys mainly motorway.

At the moment i have a GPZ305, in really good nick, well looked after and well serviced. All the problems i had with the bike knocked my confidence with the reliability of the bike though.

If i did get the job do you think a GPZ305 would put up with 80miles everyday 5 or 6 times a week?

What bike would you recommend? What bike do you use to do the long commute on?
Im considering getting the bigger, and more reliable GPZ500s. I love GPZ's Very Happy

Cheers,
Shaun

I'm "between projects" at the moment, but I use my CB500 for daily 80 mile round trip commutes, of which 2/3rds is motorway. It's ideal for the job (45l topbox is useful), but would prefer an even more upright riding position, and a screen. Consumption is good at 62mpg, and it'll sit quite happily at 90 (although I don't). As long as the chain, tyres and oil are regularly checked, I think it'll keep going for years.

i do 65 miles a day round trip on an 01 yamaha fazer 600. 55 miles of that is on an "A" road at about 80ish, the other 10 is through london filtering mainly.

Remember if your going to be doing 70 miles a day the bikes milage will clock up quickly, go for something reliable and well looked after - aswell as regular services.

I do 20-25 miles per day on a TRX850. I'd like a hack of some description to do the journey in bad weather though.

Your current bike should be OK for that but there would be better options for whats a pretty long run every day.
A shaft drive (and bigger) bike would make life easier - it would also be a good idea to have a standby bike for problem days if they occur.

In a summer job i'm considering it'll be 10 miles each way. I'll be doing it on my Bandit. I don't think that is a very big commute tbh. Laughing

I do a 32 mile round trip on a YBR125, but it's into Manchester so the 125 is pretty suited to the job. I especially love the fact it only costs just under £5 a week in fuel!

Aiming to get myself a bigger bike in the next couple of months though as it's a bit boring on the thrill factor which was one of the reasons I got into biking in the first place.

I commute 7 miles to work. I used to do it on my 2006 FZ1 until my neighbor decided to write it off Evil or Very Mad. I've not started using my R1 to commute on as yet but probably will from March.

Maybe a bandit 600/650S or an SV650S would be good for your commute? Both are quite reliable and you can pick them up cheaply. Both have an upper fairing so should be comfortable.

12 miles a day at the moment, through London on my ER-5.

When I move house it'll go up to about 50. I fancier a meatier machine for that commute.

15 miles each way on a ybr125. About 10 miles of that is through stationary/slow-moving traffic, so I could probably get away with something smaller

20 miles? Kenny to Speke? Razz

I do about 6 miles each way on a GS500E, about 18 if I'm coming from the GF's place in Warrington.

I used to ride 50 miles each way on an ER5.

As others have mentioned, get yourself a backup bike. If mine broke down it was an additional £15 a day on train fares on top of the repair of the bike!

It soon adds up!
