is it a good idea?

i've been thinking about adding some scotchlite reflective vinyl tape to my leathers, as they're pretty much all black, and i don't fancy one of those hi-viz roadworkers jackets (although i'd get one if all else failed)

has anyone tried this? do you recon the adhesive would be strong enough to be practical? or would it damage the leather?

any advice much appreciated,

Ben

It'd stick across the back of your helmet a whole lot better.

i heard that sticking things to your helmet damages the shell.

but if you can get helmet specific stickers i'm all for being as reflective as possible! Smile

You can stick what you want on an Arai, says so on the instructions they come with. Don't know about other makes.

I can't see how it would damage the shell to be honest. You'd be sticking it to the paint anyway.

Even for hard hats it's recomended no to paint/draw/stick stuff on as apparently the UV rays react with them over time and damage the shell?

BTW you can get scotchlite tape to sew on

Quote:
Painting of an Arai helmet is allowed (check the instructions in your manual), But before painting remove all plastic (polycarbonate) parts. DO NOT remove any (trim) rubbers and cover the complete inside of the helmet to avoid the agressive fumes will damage the inner part of the helmet. Self-adhesive decals ('stickers') may be used on the helmet, they don't have any influence on the material.

Going back to the original question, sticking self-adhesive reflective tape on to your leather jackets should be fine. What might be better is sew-on reflective tape as it's likely to be more resiliant. Depends how handy you are with a needle and thread (and a thimble).

Personally I've gone down the high-viz waistcoat route as I don't always want to wear it, and when it gets grubby I can just replace it.

The ones that fasten with Velcro aren't all that good as they tend to come undone over 30, but I've managed to get one with a zip and it works fine (even if I do look like a dispatch rider!).

If you don't like traditional HiViz stuff, you can always opt for something more seasonal.....

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I sometimes see a bloke near me who, during summer, rides in shorts, t-shirt, trainers, open faced lid and no gloves - topped off with a natty hi-viz. I guess it gives him the illusion of safety and security.
Personally i think he looks a knob.

you can stick it on but don't use super glue, failing that needle and thread and alot of time will do the trick

Cheers guys,

I think i'm gonna go down the Hi-Viz jacket route route, i don't recon i'll be able to pull it off style-wise, and i'll probably look like a right nob! But at the end of the day i'd rather have drivers laughing and hurling abuse at me than have them ignore me - "sorry mate, didn't see you"

Might cover myself in tape for good measure! Smile

Thanks. I think Smile

The reason I've got the camo trousers is that they've got good zips on the bottom of the leg and wide gussets to get them on over your boots.
