I have an idea...

it's usually a bad thing when that happens.

I had a monster 600, I loved it.. but it wasn't powerful enough.

I have a thunderace, among others, that has had a lot of suspension and braking work done to it, but is cosmetically tatty, and a relatively high mileage, so maybe isn't worth that much.

do I sell a few bikes and get another monster, or do I streetfighter the ace to get my naked bike thrills?

If it's already cosmetically challenged, for my Penny Coin Penny Coin I'd be tempted to try a streetfighter project Thumbs Up

Or... you could buy a 900 Monster and while your riding that (I know your not short of a few bikes to ride anyway) you could keep the Ace as a project and return it to it's former glory Thumbs Up

Have your cake and eat it. Turns into expensive and time consuming cake though Smile

Not too bad. I've always wanted a streetfighter project, so it's obviously my choice.

What would you do with it? New swing arm, seat unit/subframe, forks/yolks, lights? Or just remove the fairing and leave it?

I'd love to clean your bike Laughing. Are there any other engines that can just drop into your Thunderace frame? (old Fireblades drop into my Hornet's :lol Twisted Evil). May be a good route to take.

the thunderace engine is plenty powerful enough... I really don't see a need for anything else there..

it's already got a custom built rear shock, the forks have been resprung, valved and dropped thru thr yokes a little, it's got Gilles rearsets and PMF cast iron full floaters plus braided hoses, so as far as handling and performance goes, it's pretty well sorted.

I do fancy getting it tidied up and back to how it should be, but I'm useless at getting a good finish, and am better at making things work.

Fair enough, I'd just take it to bits and clean it up real nice Smile. With the engine comment, I also was getting at the fact you could buy another engine that was lower mileage and not have any problems with it.

Do you mean to actually streetfighter it, or so you mean that you just want to bolt on some aftermarket "streetfighter style" tat and remove the fairing?

If that's true (and from what I've seen you post on here I'm inclined to believe it), then go for it. Make a proper job of it rather than throwing the M&P catalogue into the garage Very Happy

I've got a spare engine for it anyway...

that's going to get an FZR 6 speed gearbox slotted in to replace the 5 speed stock one when I get the time.

if I was to do it.. I'd probably buy the headlights and bars, and make everything else myself.

You need to look at what the 'ace would sell for on the open market then consider if it is worth more or less to you as a working bike of known provenance.

If it's worth less to you, sell it. If it's worth more to you, bring on the Renthals.

This is why I've kept the GPZ. It's so tatty it is probably only worth a couple of hundred quid but it is mechanically sound and is still perfectly capable of doing the business. As such, I'm keeping it until it dies, it owes me nothing. I reckon I can squeeze more moneys worth of use out of it than I'd get by selling it.

Hi

Personally I think most streetfighter look truely awful. There is the odd well done one, but most just like a write off that someone could not be bothered to fix.

As such I would say go for the Monster.

As to the Thunderace, thought they were one of the tougher engines around. It is the gearbox from the FZ750 or YZF750 that gives it 6 gears.

All the best

Keith

As a few have said - an awful lot of 'Streetfightered' bikes just look like someone has thrown a set of renthals and a crappy headlight at them and thrown away the fairing! I voted for streetfighter cos I love a good project and sounds to me like you could make a lovely job of this - but do it properly!

I intend doing something similar with my 'slabby' - it's my long-term project. I personally think they look godawful ugly the way Suzuki originally made em, but take away those horrible fairings and you've got a beast of a bike with a lot of potential! Thumbs Up

Or just do a cheap lash-up job and enjoy riding it without worrying about getting it dirty or marking the paintwork.

Laughing I've done that - even earning myself a 'best rat' trophy at a rally! But time now to clean her up and get her looking like she should!

Mine wasn't overly shiney when i got it.. but its nice to have something you can drop and it don't matter.. my rhs mirror for example is of a zxr750, and is white and not black like the other side.. I just happen to have a black one but why bother? it wont work any different :/

Haveing a tatty bike is quite liberateing, like climbing a tall building throwing your clothes off the edge and peeing on people you dont like from a great height while cackleing to yourself.. sorta
