This isn't 'new' news, but I found it quite funny, yet extremley sad that even today Americans seem to struggle with the basics of Geography and whats outside their borders. IIRC I read that around 11% of Americans couldn't even locate America on a map. Shocked But, I suppose if your country would rather spend it's taxes on it's defence budget and invading other countries, something has to give and it seems that Geography lessons have. Some interesting links and a funny videos.

I'm sort of liking the guy who wants to invade Italy - at least he went for a country not often mentioned Smile

Heck, assuming the rest of Europe just whistled and got on with other stuff instead of defending the place it *could* be a war the USA stands a chance of not losing Shocked

I'm sure there are comparable numbers in this country who are incapable of pointing out notable places on the globe. It's just more fashionable to slag off the Yanks.

I seem to remember a recent survey finding that a measurable proportion of British kids thought that Gandalf had beaten the Spanish Armada.

I have to agree Mister James, "America Bashing" as I now call it seems to be a growing trend amoungst people everywhere outside the US borders. There are stupid people everywhere, for example - https://www.expatica.com/actual/article.asp?subchannel_id=26&story_id=15169

Ooops - forgot to mention the one who was confused about who was Israel and who was Palestine. Hope for their sake they don't meet any Israelis or Palestinians and let that slip Shocked

For me, it being fashionable to slag off the Yanks isn't why I take the piss out of stuff like this. I do it because it's scary... I also do it to people who are that ill-informed wherever they live (assuming they have potential access to information that is).

Allow me to develop the theme, and suggest that people may find themselves more likely to have access to information slating America, because of the popularity of it. Most people are too lazy to chase up intel for themselves, relying instead on others spoon-feeding them whatever they choose.

/nod - agreed. Far too many people seem to be becoming incapable of individual research, thought or opinion.

(One of the reasons I liked the Italy guy - I have no idea on his research for the statement or whether an awful lot of thought went into it but at least he had a startlingly different opnion to offer than the rest of the people in the clip Very Happy)

It doesn't however mean I can't take the piss out of offerings that are presented like this - I just don't post about the things I see/hear etc in life that scare me in the same vein but believe me, I rip the piss there too > <

Every country (excluding third world countries) should have an equal(ish) ratio of dumb/normal/super intelligent people anyway. Remember the bell curve (normal distribution)!
If people in third world countries all had access to education then they too would have a ratio like the rest of the world.

As has been said, it is just a bit of fun to take the piss out of the dumb Americans. Before them it was the Irish (and the Irish jokes still happen). Laughing

To be fair, if you live in america, there arent many nearby countries worth visiting, especially if you live in the middle of america.

I dont think it matters if americans know that other countries exist or where they are.

However it is more concerning when their presidents and people who form their foreign policy dont have much more knowledge.

Or worse, they think they know about the rest of the world but actuallly know fuck all. Meddling with other countries fucking things up is at best misguided, and at worst its evil leading to thousands, possibly millions of unnecessary deaths.

Before America ruled the world, we did, and we also did a lot of bad and a lot of good.

If you are poweful, you hang onto that power by selfishly preserving that position of power, if you dont you arent powerful anymore.
