Im hoping to go exploring for a few days in the summer, My bike is a air cooled 125 4T, would this pose a problem for a few hundred miles a day? would it over heat? is there anything i need to do to the bike?
thanks

I said in a post the other day about a trip I did round NZ on an air cooled, 2 stroke 50cc scooter with no problems, did about 200 miles some days aswell.

Some guys did 26,000km round on OZ on 200cc Vespas aswell and they came though ok here- https://www.rightaroundaustralia.com/index2.htm

So 200-300 miles will be no problem for a XR125 Thumbs Up

125cc single shouldn't get too hot. It's large aircooled engines that you've got to worry about. When I thrash my 550/4 at lower speeds smoke comes off it due to all the oil stuck the engine starting to burn off due to the massive heat generated. That said, Klause off this forum never had any problems running his aircooled 750cc Ducati Monster in Spain/Portugal during the middle of summer.

Make sure you keep the oil topped up to maximum though, as the oil is key to keeping the engine running at the correct temperature.

Nath, does that mean I could have problems with a Bandit? It's a 600cc inline 4 oil/air cooled engine. Confused

Your bike is bombproof and runs on neglect, trust me. 2-300 is nothing on an XR125, i remember doing that in a day then had to do another 200 the next day. You should be fine, as long as you stay of the motorway, the bike really doesn't like it. On A roads, you should be fine. If you want to head up the motorways, adopt the superman pose, feet on pillion pegs and sit as flat on the bike as possible, you'll gain a few more em pee aitch that way Thumbs Up

Overheating is not an issue for the bike and there is NOTHING you should need to do with your XR, just keep the chain lubed and you'll be fine

If you are travelling at slow speed in a hot climate for long periods of time then it will overheat. Things like "Kill Spills" and other mass rideouts are well known for people dropping out overheating their bikes.

If you make sure you keep the oil topped up you're unlikely to encounter problems in 95% of riding conditions. I only had serious overheating problems once in my 18,500 mile tour of Europe, and I don't believe Klause had any problems at all in the 3,500 he did in Spain. If you're going to be stationary for any length of time you should always switch off your engine, eg at a railway crossing.

Given the choice I would always choose a watercooled bike for riding in hot climates. I took my Bros400 down to Spain, and when stopped in traffic during the midday heat you could see the temperature guage shoot straight up as soon as you stopped moving. But the moment it hit a certain level the fan would turn on and the temperature would drop straight back down. Very reassuring.
