 |
|
Hi,
Right well I posted a topic or two late last year about buying a new bike. This is a little write up, excuse any spelling mistakes or any 'improper' English (I didn't do very well in GCSE as you can probably tell!). It was kinda written for non-bikers as I posted it on myspace and another forum I'm on so do excuse that too.
I have a few pictures mostly of the weather from out of the car. I also have a very funny video of Mike (Ram_Doom) but he wont let me post it.
Here we go...
| Quote: | Several weeks ago my friend Mike discovered upon a great idea, a sports 400.
Let me start from the beginning;
Late last year around October-ish, I decided to get a new bike. Having no money as I wasn't getting paid until the end of November proved a problem. Many times I thought of getting a bike on finance but that proved another problem. What Bike?
Started with an SV650s then moved on to a Triumph Speed Triple. The Speed Four then came into the equation being around £4000 new. Finding said 'Speed Four' was proving a difficult matter and also I didn't have four grand.
Bugger that then...
The month passed and my wage came in from my new job, slightly more than I expected so I went back to bike searching.
Many an insurance quote did I get filling up databases all around. I had several quotes, all around the 400 - 500 mark for third party fire and theft. One of which was a Yamaha YZF-R6.
Could of had that £600 fully comp yet my father didn't believe they would of insured me. Drats.
The search continued, quote after quote. SZRs, YZFs, SVs and even Ducatis.
This is when my good, ginger, friend Mike came up with the idea for a sports 400. Already having a 400 made me think about this.
400's are usually ragged the shit out of and obviously for wanting to make my internet and pub bragging penis larger I wanted a bigger capacity bike (TRX850 and Z750 would of been bigger than Mike's so I would of been happy). The main reason being 400's are ragged senseless, usually by me and other like-minded teenagers.
So I searched on e-bay and Ad-trader like most good folk who want to buy an auto-mobile do.
VFRs, CBRs and ZXRs a plenty. All either crash damaged or broken to misuse.
I don't have a particuarly good thing going with maintaining bikes...
He then stumbled along an add in one of the forums we sometimes visit (400 Grey Bike). An old 80's 400 sports bike? Well I never. A Yamaha 1989 FZR 400R Exup model. In pretty damn good condition too!
The price started at £800, scrolled down the page. Lots of people interested, kept scrolling. £700 or it's going on e-bay...
I decided to e-mail said person and find out if he'd take £700 cash. He did. We had a chat and I checked back onto the forum.
PETERBOROUGH?!
The fucker lives in Peterborough!
I decided to buy it, got an insurance quote on it and agreed with Mike that he would take me up there and I would pay for his petrol and snacks.
It's on...
One long week later, it's Sunday 7th January and we're on our way.
Now bear in mind I live in Swansea, South Wales. This guy lives in Peterborough which is about 240 miles away.
After filling up and putting 34.20 (it's sad I remembered) into Mike's old Nissan Primara we set off at 9:40am.
The weather was awful, I had my leather trousers on, my waterproof boots and my leather jacket. Leathers are made for summer so Mike let me borrow a one piece waterproof suit.
After many wrong turns, CDs and singing along to Muse (and a stop in McDonalds in which everyone looked at me. I think it was the leather..) we finally got to Peterborough. One last more wrong turn and we get on our way again.
We pull up to see the FZR proudly sitting outside waiting. Looked alot cleaner in the pictures but for a 17 year old bike £700 was a bargain, especially since it's only done 14xxx miles.
After a bit of chatting and handshaking I took it for a spin. Mike and Pete (the guy who was selling) both said take it up on a by-pass. Now, not being from 'Oop North' I didn't know where the hell I was and decided just to go very fast on small roads.
Took it through the gears, clutch was a bit dodgy but they aren't expensive. Loved the sound of the induction past 8000 revs.
Rode back to his house (after a few wrong turns. We're just men after all...) and parked up. Went inside and he made us an awesome cuppa. All the bits ready to go (new air filter, origional silencer etc...) were on the table aswell as V5 and some service history.
Checked it all out, seemed OK. Got down to business and said "Will you take £650?." He declined and said £680. Still cheaper than I would of paid anyway.
Handed over the money and shook hands. Grabbed all the stuff and lumped it in the car.
Now I had to put all my gear on which is an easy task, except the rain suit. That was really hard to get on.
Shook hands again and started her up. Vroom, she came to life. Popped lights on and followed Mike to nearest petrol station (in which we got lost on the first corner...).
It was still light and pretty dry in Peterborough so I gave it a little although not too much as tires were muddy from being in Pete's back yard (where he keeps his bikes). It turned in so easily. It's so nice to have a bike that goes around corners.
Filled up and it only cost £8.00 odd. Put another £20.00 in Mike's car and off we went.
We agreed to stop after 70 Miles as I didn't know what the tank range was (I do now, it's about 110 Miles before reserve).
Stopped, grabbed something to drink and made a dash for the toilet as I was dying to pee since Peterborough! We filled up the bike again and set off.
An hour and a bit had passed since we left and stopped at services to fill up and we'd only covered 70 Miles. Only another 170 to go.
Another 40 Miles and it started raining, heavily. We stopped at the next services and filled up again. The wind was getting heavier and my visor was fogging up every 5 seconds. Not a nice experience!
110~ Miles to go...
Set off again and by now I wish I was home having band practise with Dean.
On the way back it seemed we were going a different way but being pitch black out and the fact the spray was blinding and the visor fogging up every five seconds might of just been playing with my mind.
30 minutes later and we're in Wales. Wait, what?
Well we were in Usk and I needed fuel so we stopped off. This was the last time we needed to stop. Woohoo!
So we set off going down some strange A roads. At night with terrible weather these roads are scary.
Newport...
Cardiff....
Bridgend.... 24 Miles to go!
We get to Port Talbot and I've never been so happy to see the steel works.
I quickly accelerate (well, as quick as 400's can!) to 120mph and Mike speed up a bit too. I give him a thumbs up and let him go infront as he remembers where the speed cameras are. Oops!
We make our way past Neath and I pull off the Motorway as my back is killing me. 4 Miles to go and we go through Llansamlet and up to Morriston. I overtake Mike and show him the quickest way back to my house.
Finally get to my street and I think I gave a big sigh of relief when I pulled up the drive.
Got in and my mother made Mike and I a cup of tea. |
Well, this has made me slightly less bored on a Saturday night being stuck in. Hope at least someone had a good read out of this.
Cheers,
Seph. |

My relationship with my FZR did nt get off to the best start so I have a negative attitude towards them, its a shame as from all accounts they are stonking bikes.
They are a piece of piss to take apart and put back together again and again and again
Check out www.fzrarchives.com/ipb they are helpful bunch and have some very nice looking FZR's on there.
You should notice a huge difference between the riding postion and acceleration compared to the Bandit, just keep the revs up and it'll set yer ass on fire ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

If you want, I have some jack up dog bones for the FZR, free
Sorry forgot to mention, they are brand new and never made it on to the bike. They were bought 5 mins before the bike died for the final time ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |
