headlight deflectors..

when riding abroad do i need headlight deflectors ? do i buy the car ones in halfords or is there bike specific ones?

You might not need them - some bike have flat beam headlights, rather than headlights that 'kick' one way or another. I'd check this first, but if your light does kick up to the left (as it should for the UK) then you will need a deflector. A car one will do the job, but then so will a bit of gaffa tape over the section of the lens that has the kick. If your bike is an import then it might have a right/continental kick on the light still anyway.

Stick your bike infront of a garage door at night to observe exactly where your headlamp points. If it doesn't point strongly to the left you'll be fine.

Bare in mind that in many continental countries the car drivers have their headlamps badly adjusted, so you wouldn't be out of place if you didn't bother sorting out your UK left-aimed lamp.


The headlamp on my ratbike points up and to the right very badly, and I have ridden it for several months like this without problems. I wouldn't worry too much about it really. I've been pulled up by coppers on the continent several times and inspecting the legality of the bike has never seemed to be of much interest to them.

I agree with Nath don`t worry. Last year 3 of us were in France, Italy and Swiss on GSX1300R, FJR1300 and a ZX10 none of us had deflectors on our headlights and none of us were flashed by annoyed car drivers.
We also had police in an unmarked car have a jolly old look at the bikes whilst we were re-fueling.
